Old Guy Talk...Growing old is not for the weak.

Stress is the worst. I believe that stress causes more deaths than any other condition, it's just that stress comes with many names attached to it, but the bottom line is a ton of ailments are brought on by stress. I retired at 58 due to stress, a stressful job is not worth your well being. I kept telling myself I can handle stress no problem, but I was fooling myself. I gained weight the last few years before retiring and suffered other effects that I never was aware of until I retired.

I quit drinking 30 yrs ago and don't miss it in the least.

And sleep is critical to good health, and I mean good sleep. Stress causes sleep issues for a lot of people, at least with me it does.

There some things that happen to us we can't control because of genetics. We can mitigate them sometimes by taking action such as a lifestyle change or medication. I was fortunate to inherit good genes, I was always in good shape into my mid 50's. Good blood work results every year, no extra weight, and good strength and stamina. I did work out regularly until my late 40's but no other dedicated efforts other than working hard and playing hard. But then a few months after I retired I was diagnosed with ALS (which is not genetic of course) so you never know what life will throw at you! I had to give up duning, which was my passion, a year after my diagnosis but am 64 now and still somewhat upright and breathing.  :dude:

I guess what I'm getting at is get stress out of your life, do what you can to take of yourself, and enjoy the time you have because life doesn't always come with a warranty so enjoy the ride while it lasts!!

(And if I post some weird chit sometimes, cut me some slack, I have a good excuse! )
Yes, stress. I had a very stressful job (at least for me) for over 15 years. I quit that job in May of 2020 right at the apex of the Covid garbage. I know have a non stress job that doesn't pay near as well but boy what an improvement in my life. Everyday is a good day.....

What helped me was a costco mattress topper, but more importantly if I am side or back sleeper and purchased the specific pillows made for it. After many tries with a CPAP and different masks, I could not sleep with one on. BUT now I sleep with a side sleep pillow, helps substantially, Costco pillows are worthless.  I use nasal strips from Amazon and sleep like a baby on most nights (depends if you are a mouth or nose breather). I use the app Snorelab to monitor my sleeping and gives me a report in the morning on howmuch I snored (there might be better apps out there, sleep studies are mostly a scam) . One thing I have learned for sure, these doctors make money on labs/tests/prescriptions most could care less or dont have the wisdom to fix the main issue just to patch it up. Do not trust them, do your own research. After many CPAP studies not one person mentioned to change your routine, bed, pillow or anythign else. DO NOT TRUST ANY DR. Do your own research, I sleep much better now. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0100KW2NW/?coliid=I1NK38POAJYWK2&colid=34WV823RQG9QV&psc=0&ref_=list_c_wl_lv_ov_lig_dp_it

im younger 43 but i have had my issues.

i no longer drink, that was a big change right there.

diet is a big one. i dont have a relationship with food at all, i eat beacuse i need to, im a gym rat i eat alot, but i eat the same things pretty much every day.  i know most wont like this part but my diet is mostly vegan. after 5 years or so i just started eating some chicken here and there, and some turkey. red meat is not good for your body, i felt a difference when i cut out dairy. sometimes ill have something with cheese on it and i can feel the difference, i feel sluggish when i eat something heavy in dairy.

i totally understand the not sleeping and not turning your brain off. have you tried edibles? those have helped me in a few ways. my brain still will not turn off but it will change my thoughts to stuff that just doesnt matter and i can relax. i dont take alot just a 10mg is good but i do take it on empty stomach. also with pain management. i have a bunch of tramadol, and used to take one here and there for bad pain i get sometimes from previous injuries. for me a 10mg edible does a better job than a 100mg tramadol and i dont feel like crap and useless like i do on tramadol. my fav edible is one from lost farms, the strain is wedding cake its an indica dominate.

as for TRT, i have been taking it for probably 6 years, im on the low end naturally and being a gym rat i wanted it to help with building muscle. the dose is small about 200-250mg per week. i have tried higher dose but felt better on the lower. it will suppress your natural but not shut it down, if you want to come off the TRT it is possible and your body can rebound, coming off can be done like a PCT protocol that bodybuilders use when they come off a roid cycle, mainly using something like enclomipene, this can also be used to help boost your natural if you want to try that before TRT,(there are sites that sell this as a research chemical and completely legal to buy)  those test booster pills everyone sells is snake oil. also you need to go injection, the other methods are just not as effective. there is also a TRT called a pellet therapy, they will cut your cheek and place a pellet in the butt muscle that will dissolve over a time period, normally like 6 months.

last is exercise, this is something you have to want to do. i love the gym and dont feel right if i dont workout, its as much mental as it is physical. if there is a sport you used to play finding an adult league would help. even just going out for a walk with the dog is great, being out moving. i also play a pretty competitive adult hockey league, its not just a bunch of out of shape guys still trying to play its some decent hockey. exercise is tough one for people to get going, but if you stay with it and stay consistent you will notice differences and feel much better, but fitness is a slow journey, remember you didnt put on the weight overnight and it wont come off overnight. the fitness part is something i have really enjoyed.

@Dirtywhiteboy posted on here years ago about us spending 1/3 of our lives in bed, so why would you NOT invest in a good bed.  That changed my perspective on mattresses and bedding.

Now if i could just figure out how to turn my brain off and get a good nigjts sleep.  I have another sleep study coming up so I'm hopeful they will figure some things out.
I read entertaining fiction.  Nothing serious.  Helps reset the mind, clear chit out.

Oh, and no caffeine after 3pm.

First time to post. I have bought several things off of Glamis Dunes but never have posted. I'm 54 now and when I turned 44 I started feeling the affects of growing older. Joints neck back really started bothering me. I've grown up kind out in the country raised on 10 acres goats and a garden since I was a kid. I lived on the same road all but 6 months of my life. I live on 20 acres now do more gardening have some cows and acquired some acreage about an hour away. Since working on the land an hour away sometimes 3- 4 days a week my perspective on life and what matters has shifted. My oldest son lives in my house that I grew up in, and he's soon to be a dad (first grand child!) Our goal is to sell my house here and move off grid like Wash 11 (Joel and Amy)  I think they have it figured out!

Thanks for the Post. Love your screen name. Nothing better than being a Texan. I read "Simplify" your life in your post. The pains will be there so be it. Country way of living. I agree, I think Wash 11 has figured it out. Peace

Try the White or Green noise app?

As for the weight, I too struggle with it. 53 years old, 5'-11" and tip the scale between 204-208. I need to be about 175-180?

I try to walk every day, I don't drink every day, avoid soda, fast food but splurge every once in a while.

:dunno:

Gotta get back on my mountain bike...been about 5 months since riding consistantly...

6'0" 230. I should be 6'0" 228 by tomorrow. Peace

62,   6'1" 240  mind is active all day,  nights got to get up to pee 1-3 times, but go outside and check out the stars!

i take a low dose of blood pressure and cholesterol  5 and 10mm.  blood pressure and pulse are awesome at night but it seems to race a lot just to get up and pee!  used to ride my mountain bike twice a week until covid messed that up.  i need more physical exercise.  work around the house all day long on weds and am very active at work.  could fall asleep in 5 min anywhere, let me just sit down and poof im out.

My recommendation to Y'ALL.....................Don't challenge him to an EPO Race! Peace

To me height/weight statistics are kinda bs.  There are many body types, imo.

Myself, I'm 5'10, 250, 45yo.  A handful of us have met..

Sure I could lose a few (dropped 20 in the last couple months), but I'm not the big beer belly'd guy.  I eat well, and only drink on the weekends.  My work days are active with between 6-10k steps and maybe 10 flights of stairs in the mix. I don't hit the gym, yet my chest is wider than my hips,  I've somehow carried muscle mass in my legs my whole life(bonus in youth sports, curse as an adult).  My weight has fluctuated throughout my life, yet my legs don't really change much, They're muscle...thighs too.  I'd bet most guys on this board couldn't wrap their hands around my calves with both hands and I haven't hit the calf machine in nearly 30 years....A pant size that fits my waist is nearly guarantied tight on calves.  Dress pants SUCK even more.

Could I starve myself, quit drinking, and train for a marathon to get to 230?  Sure.  F' that miserable life.

My BP is awesome.  My cholesterol is too.  Eat meds just to sleep...ymmv

eta....basically zero soda or fast food.

All the things to look forward too, lol. I was out at the dunes a few weeks back with my grandpa. Hes 85 and still leading the pack. just had a stint put in due to a minor stroke a couple weeks before the trip... its hard to watch him walk around slowly, especially through the sand. "gettin old is tough!.... I would have been ok to go at 70." - He has said this to me now multiple times, but hes a super healthy dude. Still works on those big quilting machines, eats plenty of garlic and butter with everything, never drank or smoked... not what he use to be but hes ok with it and so is everyone in the group. Im only 31, actually been thinking about my health since that trip, lucky for me I throw hot tires around most the day so its a decent work out.

Whos the oldest on here?
