.

I used to think I'd live forever.  Now, in my 40s, I wonder how much 80 will hurt.

Pick it up brother, find something outdoors that you love or at least enjoy, and take the time to do that.

I am 57 years old, dealing with Diabetes, trying to completely understand that.  5 years ago, I was working out 4-5 days a week, getting strong and then I hurt my Achilles tendon.  7 months later, when it no longer hurt and I could stretch it some, I had already lost 45lbs.  Lost tons of muscle but my feet, Achilles, knees felt way better.  I know have zero interest putting all that muscle/weight back on.

My goals now are to be more active every day.  This year I have skied/snowboarded 10 days (1 day last year).  I have been riding the MC at the track once a week (it had been 30 years since I had been on a real track).  Golfing a bit more, walking the dog a couple days of week.................my goals are to mix it up, have fun, and just be active.  Keep moving!

No I don’t closely watch or measure the salt. I don’t put salt on my food and I don’t use seasoning that have a lot of salt. I check other food to see if they have salt in then already or take a guess that they do and avoid them. My meals are pretty bland, meat, beans, rice.  I have some stress that I can’t control so I watch salt, cholesterol, and alcohol, the things I do have control over.

I’m of the belief that red meat is good and eat it frequently.

Thanks for sharing the details of your heart attack. It is a big concern of mine and appreciate the info.
I never salted any food for years either. But when you look at a lot of stuff out there like any condiment, olives, hot sauce, pancakes, any kind of processed food, lunch meats, etc a lot of it is loaded. I was in the 4 to 5,000 a day range thinking I was eating good. No bueno. Not even close. Sounds like you're at least on the right track. I'm just a freak about it now.

Best investment I have made is to purchase this stretch machine https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01NBN1T06?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details. I leave it in my living room every time I pass by I try to get a quick stretch in, helps alot and seems to improve circulation. The older I get the harder it is to get on the ground and get a good stretch.  This for the calves https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B097KGYGXF/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1.  Here is a good vid about stretching

One other thing I did about 5 years ago, always stop eating everything on my plate, don't be afraid to leave those last 2 bites on the plate.  My dinner time meals are now small.

Have you guys lost your desire ?

Sex should be at the top of this list for all the health reasons mentioned.  Make it happen Fellas !

50 is that magic age number that it all changes after that.....not all doom and gloom but I've said it for a few years now that you will know when you hit 50!!

I'm 54 so I know from experience  :5:

A few years ago I hit 281#'s (6'1") and I was miserable in every way!

Since then I really focused on portion control and intermittent fasting and reducing sugar intake. It's taken a few years but down 50#'s and feel much better.

Every diet / work out plan works.....hard part is sticking to said plan.

At 56 I guess I'm fortunate to not be on any meds, cholesterol numbers are great, blood pressure is great, not to many aches and pains just need to drop another 10lbs. What made a huge difference for me, the wife went on a health kick about 10 years ago. She decided she needed to loose weight and wasn't going down the easy path of the fad diets. She let me know her plan of eating healthy and working out. I let her know if it is good enough for her, its good enough for me. I didn't want her making me something different for dinner. Just eating healthier, I dropped 15 lbs.

As for sleeping, never thought I had any real sleeping issues. We needed a new mattress since ours was about 15 yrs old and the wife convinced me to get a sleep number. What a difference that made once we got it dialed in. I thought I was sleeping well, little did I know how much of a difference a mattress could make.

The MOHO has a Sleep Number and I sleep a lot better in that than the one in the Dream Home. Going to be tough to convince the wife to switch. She loves it. Happy Wife, you know the rest. Peace

@Dirtywhiteboy posted on here years ago about us spending 1/3 of our lives in bed, so why would you NOT invest in a good bed.  That changed my perspective on mattresses and bedding.

Now if i could just figure out how to turn my brain off and get a good nigjts sleep.  I have another sleep study coming up so I'm hopeful they will figure some things out.
im 56 and sleep on the floor lol. futon mattress, have for many years. I sleep like a baby, wife sleeps in the master in our bed. I can't stand a bed...........well when we had a waveless waterbed I was good lol. when i travel for work and sleep in hotels I don't sleep worth a damn. I was just in dallas last week, very restless and up at 4am and couldn't go back to sleep. got home went to bed/floor lol, slept like a rock and got caught up in one night lol. I slept on the floor when I was about 16 my water bed broke and I used the bed frame to build a workbench. back then I just slept on a blanket. from a long day at work and my backs killing me, the floor seems to put everything back in place. We have an expensive bed, memory foam some damn high dollar bed and I can do about a night or 2 and back to the floor I go lol.

Last year we bought a SAATVA King size bed. It was not cheap, we got the extra firm for fat dudes like me.

Along with the American Iron metal bed and frame, it's indestructible and worth every penny.

I've never slept so good, where I didn't wake up sore. Even my snoring/apnea got better.

This and the weight loss no more CPAP, well im sure i would still benefit from it...but I'm no longer choking and gasping for air all Night.

Stress is the worst. I believe that stress causes more deaths than any other condition, it's just that stress comes with many names attached to it, but the bottom line is a ton of ailments are brought on by stress. I retired at 58 due to stress, a stressful job is not worth your well being. I kept telling myself I can handle stress no problem, but I was fooling myself. I gained weight the last few years before retiring and suffered other effects that I never was aware of until I retired.

I quit drinking 30 yrs ago and don't miss it in the least.

And sleep is critical to good health, and I mean good sleep. Stress causes sleep issues for a lot of people, at least with me it does.

There some things that happen to us we can't control because of genetics. We can mitigate them sometimes by taking action such as a lifestyle change or medication. I was fortunate to inherit good genes, I was always in good shape into my mid 50's. Good blood work results every year, no extra weight, and good strength and stamina. I did work out regularly until my late 40's but no other dedicated efforts other than working hard and playing hard. But then a few months after I retired I was diagnosed with ALS (which is not genetic of course) so you never know what life will throw at you! I had to give up duning, which was my passion, a year after my diagnosis but am 64 now and still somewhat upright and breathing.  :dude:

I guess what I'm getting at is get stress out of your life, do what you can to take of yourself, and enjoy the time you have because life doesn't always come with a warranty so enjoy the ride while it lasts!!

(And if I post some weird chit sometimes, cut me some slack, I have a good excuse! )
Yes, stress. I had a very stressful job (at least for me) for over 15 years. I quit that job in May of 2020 right at the apex of the Covid garbage. I know have a non stress job that doesn't pay near as well but boy what an improvement in my life. Everyday is a good day.....

What helped me was a costco mattress topper, but more importantly if I am side or back sleeper and purchased the specific pillows made for it. After many tries with a CPAP and different masks, I could not sleep with one on. BUT now I sleep with a side sleep pillow, helps substantially, Costco pillows are worthless.  I use nasal strips from Amazon and sleep like a baby on most nights (depends if you are a mouth or nose breather). I use the app Snorelab to monitor my sleeping and gives me a report in the morning on howmuch I snored (there might be better apps out there, sleep studies are mostly a scam) . One thing I have learned for sure, these doctors make money on labs/tests/prescriptions most could care less or dont have the wisdom to fix the main issue just to patch it up. Do not trust them, do your own research. After many CPAP studies not one person mentioned to change your routine, bed, pillow or anythign else. DO NOT TRUST ANY DR. Do your own research, I sleep much better now. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0100KW2NW/?coliid=I1NK38POAJYWK2&colid=34WV823RQG9QV&psc=0&ref_=list_c_wl_lv_ov_lig_dp_it
