Annual Owens Valley trip for Thanksgiving. Obligatory Reward Mine run. Tried to get up to Coyote Flats but we were blocked by snow and ice. Then up Silver Canyon to the top of the White Mountains. Then Mazourka Peak to Papoose Flat. Good times for the final trip up there for Ol Flakey. Realized I’ve had that thing for 10 years now.

After blocking half of my garage for 3+ months the WJ project is up n running. Ended up pulling both heads and having them rebuilt as the driver side had a blown head gasket. Then a shitty China MAP sensor someone had previously installed was causing all sorts of running issues, that took a minute to figure out. That was actually the initial reason it had been brought to and eventually abandoned at the shop I bought it from as they couldn’t figure it out.  Have to still get it smogged which is going to require dropping the fuel tank to fix an EVAP system leak but whatever at this point.

Dropped the tank, found the pump seal laying down inside the tank. New seal installed, no more leaks. Got the monitors to set on a single drive, jammed over to the smog shop right away then next day AAA for tags and ish is on the road again, legally. Let the fun begin, first upgrade completed last night!

Well, after 10+ years, my old friend is off to a new life with someone else. I delivered him to his new owners on Saturday. He’s going to be living at the Blythe airport and launching boats and jet skis at the river from now on. Thanks for all the memories, Ol Flakey

Smogged, tagged, insured and back on the road! Been doing some maintenance and upgrades. It came with a 2” puck lift but the front springs were pretty sagged so Rusty’s 2.5” springs went in their place. I left the pucks in the rear but replaced all spring isolators front and rear since they were all shredded. 5100s mandatory of course. Rough Country forged adjustable track bar is a solid unit! Since WJs have small wheel wells, 31x10.5 Falkens on 16x8 Vision wheels fit the bill. Picked up some 03/04 Laredo black housing headlights from the pick a part yard and did a restore kit on them. Have a flat-tow base plate coming so I’ll do the light swap after installing that since the bumper cover has to come off. Also did the Akebono front brake caliper upgrade with new rotors and pads front and rear. Discovered the left rear axle seal is leaking and the rear diff is also grumbling so going to have to address those before long. It’s pretty hilarious how much better the WJ drives and handles over the ZJs, lol

Laredo headlights installed with some upgraded bulbs, cleaned the lenses on the fogs and installed some yellow bulbs, and installed a BlueOx towing baseplate. Also new front and rear door speakers tho still doesn’t sound all that great so will have to do something about that later. Trying to decide what to do about the rear axle, having a hard time getting myself to put any money into an aluminum Dana 44…
