1964 Dodge A-100 Hot rod sort of rat rod build thread.

We used to use those at work, but stopped because the bolt does not go all the way through. 

After a bit of time and a good bump and they rip.  Mind you our application is way different.   We changed over to through bolt types. 
How much weight was on it and also how many isolators did you use? I'm guessing that intercooler and framework is 10 to 15 lb and I'm spreading the load over eight isolators. Hopefully enough. It will be easy to change to a different style if I need to down the road.

 
we had 4 of them holding this sensor down & they were 3/8" diameter.  I dont remember the durometer or weight, but Im guessing the sensor was a good 10 to 12 Lbs.  they held up fine in normal operation, but in shipping they would rip lose all of the time. 

There were no 3" tubes on each end helping to keep it in place.  very different application....  I never liked that there was no bolt going through them.

Well I thought I posted this but I guess it didn't go through. Bought the truck in September of 2022 and it took 4 months to get the title. Started working on it in December 2022 so I'm a year into it and had not done a video of it yet.

Good stuff there. The ones I'm putting in are 1.140 diameter at the rubber and I'm doing eight of them. Pretty substantial for the weight it's going to carry so I'm hopeful it will hold up. If there are issues down the road it'd be pretty easy to install something like these or even make something. I'm going to leave the studs on the top a little long so if they sag a little I can just add washers underneath. On the ends the welds just need to clear the metal tubing and it will have some rubber weather strip inside to seal.

I did try calling volant today and they said I need to call Donaldson because that is one of their filters. Sat on hold for a while and gave up. I wanted my cold side turbo tubes up in the air so I built the airbox up 7 in. Also factoring in was this gets it high enough to keep the plastic fans away from the header. At least I think that will be okay. One panel down and three more to weld in. Then it will get some body filler at all the joints and smoothed out. Still need to cut the hole out in the wood as well. First panels I have bead rolled that you can see. Bead rolling is definitely not as easy as it looks.

Radiator is an absolute beast. Thing is awesome. I think the wire they have going to each fan is a number 10. Glad I had them cut a 45 in the top corners. Even with the radiator going up in the air from where it sits a little bit I will probably have to notch that wood for the lower hose. Now I have to dream up a cool mount for it. My intercooler riser box has all the panels welded in. Now comes all the grinding and putty work. Quite the project to build that. I still need to weld little plugs in the ends of all of the box tubing as well. So it will be all smooth. Super happy with my bead rolling even only after a few pieces. Just takes practice when you're making the curves. You can't let off the pedal and have to rotate your piece through.

Step one for the replacement side bed gussets. These are more cosmetic now than anything. Now I need to make all my other pieces and weld them all together. I like it.

So the air inlet to this turbo is 4" Will a small k&n filter flow enough air? Something only 6 in tall would be nice. Meaning the element itself would only be 5 in tall. I assume five or six inches diameter. I think I've seen the tapered ones as well. I think it would look better with a black outerwear on it as well.

I know it's a way bigger filter than you want but the napa 6637 is available everywhere, flows a ton of air and filterwears makes this outerwear for it in a few different colors IMG_20231208_220700.jpg

Coulda had a v drive. Glad I didn't go that route. Motor sits pretty high.

Made some good progress today on step two of my bed gusset pieces. Had to make a pattern for each of the four pieces because the curve is slightly different and I wanted a tight gap. Tried welding real slow with little spots and the metal still just warped all over the place. So now I'm just welding it together and then going back and metal working each one. I want to try bead roll my last pieces that run along the bedside. Just don't know if I can bend them as far as I want after bead rolling.

I figured out how to get rid of the warping when I welded. Clamp the heck out of it and it did not move very much. The factory gusset has that little bead rolled stamped edge and I wanted to try to get close to that which I was able to accomplish it. Use the bead roller and then lots of hand bending.Not far off from this first one being welded together and then some body filler. I like it. These will get painted bronze.

Whole lot of sanding. Very happy with how it all came out. I welded a nut with a backwards bolt on the top of each gusset. Then I will make an aluminum block that goes up under the lip of the bed rail. Bolt will go out and put pressure on the block to hold the top in. That way no bolts showing up top. Today I came up with a crazy idea. I have still never been super happy with any design I have come up with for the rear wheel wells. I was thinking about cutting out some flames out of 3/16 or quarter inch thick steel. Then start at the bottom of the wheel well wrap it around the wheel well and when it comes up to the top center have the flames go past floating in the air probably a foot to 16 in. Of overhang. A little bit on the wild side but I think it would fit the truck. I would have to make a buck to use the torch and bend the steel flames the same shape as the wheel well. Kind of a radical idea but I think it might be cool. Make them pointy on the ends so it can draw blood.
