What warrants a raise?

Most people nowadays think that because the cost of gas goes up it's been a year and they show up a raise is not only deserved it's required...........

Employee asked the big boss man for a raise, said cost of gas had gone up and he needed more money. Boss said OK but when the cost of gas goes down I get to take back the raise, Then he told the boss the one thing you cannot tell a Boss.  You can't do that.

I think the guy now is one of the 'experts" you find wearing an orange apron.

I have 2 employees and both share the same last name with me, so I'm biased AF. You've met them.

My son hit me up late last year saying he's been at the same pay rate for the past two years. Cool story bro. What are you doing now that's different from two years ago? Do you have your CDL? Any certificates or new licenses? He had no answer. Earn it fugger. Advance your career through education/schooling or some kind of certificate. Seriously brah.

So I gave him a $5/hour raise to shut him up. Parenting and bossing 101. But that 21 yr old and me are gonna have a talk very soon about rent and utilities. And his company fuel card. Bro, your girlfriend lives 50 miles away. That's my fuel, my tires, my insurance, my alllllll of it.
How does your son legally operate for you without at least having a B?  Driving in combo for commerce has way lower weight limits than private use.

Under 26,001 lbs is Class C.  He is in the process of getting his CDL, but CA changed it and now he needs 40 hours of class room instruction and so many hours of behind the wheel.  And that costs around $5000.  Cost me zero in 1995.

On my side gig, i haven't ever asked for a raise, I normally ask for more work/additional property to oversee and that comes with an additional monthly fee for me.

however I used to get a christmas bonus and haven't seen that in years. but overall my pay is extremely good for what I do and I have no oversite.

I have 4 company credit carsds and noone ever questions my decisions, choices or purchases. So in my mind Im grateful for the extra work I've had for 10 years.

It's not really the bonus i miss, its more of the thanks man for always having my back, and handling all the problems I never hear about. There is so much they never hear about or see, dealing with city permits, building inspections, fire inspections etc. to them it just happens magically lol.

I get those accolades from acct dept. but the main owner rarely ever says a word, calls or critiques my properties. But i can promise you one thing, there's not a soul out here that will do what I do for them. I work a regular job/career 40 hours plus a week and then put in 40-60 for them, weekends, holidays, nights etc.

dude drives a new vette, always going to exotic vacations, gave a guy in texas his vette to drive for a couple weeks for doing a good job LMMFAO, then the so called real estate mogul that was all talk and no walk was broke as hell and couldn't buy into his share. Noone ever offered me a vette to drive for a day, even though I've been with him/them thru thick and thin and tons of disasters for about 10 years.

but it is what it is, I almost make more money on the side than my career so it affords me alot of toys, luxuries etc that I prob wouldn't have otherwise, so Im content

He is driving for commerce.  Rules are WAY different.  But, carry on....

I don't come to where you work and slap the c0cks out of your mouth.  Don't tell me how to do my job.

Working for the government. At least my government. You start. You get 5% raises annually for 4 years and your max. No more, no less.
This is outside of union negotiated raises. Those fluctuate from 0% to the 7% we just got.
You can be a mediocre employee or the best and you get the same raises as everyone else.

My first job in High School. KFC. Everyone called me the Colonel. Getting paid $2.95hr. They said I was doing great and gave me a raise to $3.10hr. The following month minimum wage was raised to $3.10hr. That's the day I said "EFF YOU!" If I ever start my own company, I'll never give ($.10) Dime raises. AND................I'll never have a Time Clock either. So many people set next to the clock waiting for the straight up buzzer. Boy how times have changed. Peace

To me, meeting and or exceeding the goals set by management with a new set of goals to meet following said raise. The employees attitude, time on the job, skill level and obviously demand for their skill set is a huge factor.

I find it comical; companies always have budget for new hires but never retention, it's a big corporate blunder if you ask me. Employers need to keep in mind, that employee has to go home every night and hopefully feel good about what they accomplished that day and feel compensated for it, they also have a family (not always) to answer to and provide for.

With that said, the employees having to understand the business has to be profitable and sustainable hopefully for the long run. It should always be looked at as a give & take but the overall good for everyone involved.

I've worked for small business where you basically had to be walking out the door to get a raise, I ran a small business with employees and every year we would sit down and go over their performance and some type of raise was enacted, my thought was if I have an employee who is not worth at a minimum 1-2% pay increase then maybe it was time to move on and I've worked for a big global corporation where you can wait years for a raise because they go with the mindset that you are at the maximum pay level for that position yet every year they expect more....and now with another big global corporation but privately / family owned who believe in paying for experience and retention at a fair expectation.

what's the secret recipe?

Here is the situation Im in.  I work for a company that is part of a giant parent company on the NYSE ($5.6B in revenue last year, our company was $75M of that).  I run a relatively small dept, in our company (7 folks, out of 150 in the building) & they are ALL rock stars.  if you cant kick azz, hit the road...

But.......... I still only get 3% to spread around.  I consider myself lucky that they all stick around, they all work their asses off & I do for them as Im allowed to.  but I feel SHEETY every year when I do reviews & "raises".  it sucks.......... I hate saying "thanks for the GREAT work, here are your pennies.... When I can, I do promotions & "big raises", but they could all go somewhere else & get more money. And yes it is their decision to stick around.

Anyone ever seen 50 first dates w/ Adam Sandler & Drew Barrimore? I have an employee who is Drew Barrymore. He's driving my studs crazy and they're pulling their hair out. He's WAY too fast and is going to get someone hurt. Fire Him? Peace

catching the owner/boss banging the secretary

I give raises every 6 months. The amounts are based on 3 things Attendance, Attitude & Production.

But basically any employee that makes my job easier is always due.

I appreciate all the feedback. I have an employee who has worked for me for over 10 years. He does quality work, but he is just slow. I gave him a promotion to a lead position last year and had to put another team member in his place, as he could not keep up with the production plan. He dilly dallies and spends time not in his work area but came to me for a request for a large raise. I have other guys ready to fill the void, if he leaves. I just feel he does less, doesn't give 100% at all times., works at his own pace and slows others down at times. My issue is I appreciate loyalty. I understand the employee level, always wants more even if they are doing the same. I have full benefits, bonus program and profit sharing so it's not like they do not earn a great living.

Very interesting to see how some on here view their professions.
It would be my experience that this guy will only get lazier if you only give him the raise without discussing the issues you mentioned . His mind set right now is " Man, I been here 10 years I deserve a big raise".

If it were me I'd respond with, "Ya know, I have been wanting to give you this raise too but you aren't giving me a performance worthy of your potential".  Get the truth on the table or it will turn into a mind game with him.  This statement also allows you to control the conversation's narrative not being he is due, but he is lacking. How he responds to this will tell you a lot about were he is at in his own head.

Sometimes it's just time for guys to go. But I hope you get it worked out. Please update us.
