VW Sandrail Owners Still around?

OP, do you have much experience with VDub engines? From a power standpoint, bigger is better. From a reliability standpoint, stick with a smaller engine. Back 20 years ago, anything over 2 liters was a grenade unless it was a high $ pro built balanced and blueprinted jewel and even then, if sand got past a filter, it could eat itself fairly quickly. Depending on who you talked to, an 1835 or 1915 seemed to be the sweet displacement for long running peppy motors. Look for things like forged internals, build sheets, sand seals. I'm not to knowledgeable on volkswagons but know enough that there are more poor running unreliable vdub rails in glamis then there are reliable ones.

Not that serious to blow out $12k for a used RZR...oh I will never own a RZR,but show me a Can Am for 12K and I just might.  I'll just stick to cruising around on my dirt bike.  I know VW's have shitty suspension and I aint looking to blast through Sand Highway.  I can cruise and take my time as I've had plenty of years blasting through whoops on my Turbo Wildcat.
I can appreciate that. Believe me, if I came across a CanAm x3 for $12k-$14k I wouldn’t be telling anyone! I owned many vw powered buggies and have nothing but fun stories to tell.

You may or may not be correct about this. You do need to know how to turn a wrench to own a reliable long lasting VW. Your maintenance will be the outcome of how it will run and for how long. I have no experience with turbo vw’s because I never owned one. I did however own 4 different vw cars, built countless motors, and helped tune a lot of them. Clean the air filters every trip along with the outer wears. Grease the top and bottom of the filters when you install them. This pretty much keeps the sand out of the carbs. In the 13 years of running dual carb motors, I might have got sand in a jet less than 10 times. When you do, grab a flat head screw driver, remove the jet, and blow it out. Takes 5 min. As for syncing the carbs. Once you sync them and lock the linkage down, I’ve never pee peeed with them again. They can be a very fun and reliable motor IF you take care of it.

I will keep an eye out for you brother.  I have a Wildcat X that is within your budget, LOL.

You can still have a great time with your family with a vw rail. They CAN be reliable and enjoyable. All for less then $8,000.

So, not sure what has been said, but my story/opinion…

46-been going to the dunes for 47 years!  (Mom-thanks!)

atc70,xr70,cr80,cr250,cr500,trx250r,lr250r

always watched and wanted a rail(only VW’s at the time)but always saw guys working on them out there and I didn’t want that.
pulled the trigger and had one built by sunland buggies is phx(16years ago). I’m 6’7” so felt it was the best way and I knew nothing at this time. 4 seat berrin buggy w/1915 w/single Webber 44 n/a.  After about 2 years of working with suspension and tuning the carb and engine leaks all sealed. I was having no issues at the dunes just kept up on maintenance. Only issue with single carb really was when temps dropped below 60°(night rides) would crap out as the fuel fell apart on its way to the cylinders. Went to dual carbs , worried about all the stories of syncing and idle jets (learned once you seal your carb good (especially Top plates) air jets were not a problem anymore. I put on the dual Webber 44”s. Felt like 10-12% in torque, little snappier and solved all cold weather operation. Had a type 1 trans stock. Every Sunday for 12 years I’d try and break it. Last ride dump the clutch a little, etc. bottom of olds one day boom trans goes. I get out and thank it it for all its years of reliable service (minus reverse gear, went out first time trying to back out stuck!). Went back home bought a used trans for $125 threw it in and was back having fun for about 2 more years till one Sunday, last ride the engine felt ….old.  Got home checked everything. Lots of copper shining in the oil. Had motor tore apart and the engine was fine but every bearing had worn down perfectly over the life (which with this set up was mostly 1st gear full throttle it’s whole life)

had engine rebuilt by local guy for about $1200, lasted 1.5 trips and broke connecting rod

Saw that to build a reliable non turbo engine anymore is 3-5k.  So sold the rail minus the engine and everything that goes with it (parts, tools, etc)

this was all before the sxs’s took over and rutted everything up. Quad is almost impossible to have fun on regularly and low suspension buggies for that matter.

I then wanted SUSPENSION so found a turbo Subaru long Tavel for $12k. Great deal as no info on 091 trans. Broke second trip  rebuild all weddle for $5k. Happiest I’ve ever been ripping this thing  suspension dialed in chop, whoops doesn’t matter  now though engine is cheap if that goes($800). Trans reliability is all driver! That doesn’t mean you always have to be nice to it.

point is  don’t finance anything!

there’s never an end to the amount of f$u$n$.

best thing I do is never experience more than I can afford

that 1 day I fly 1st class I will always have to fly first class  🙂

Since you asked, I'm going to offer MHO based on experience and my own take on things, feel free to take it or leave it, I understand we all have different priorities.

In 2004, I was in the same boat and there were a lot of VW powered no travel buggies for sale out there. I rode in a few, and my 44 yr old kidneys said NO EFFING WAY. Keep in mind those were whoops in 2004, they're a lot worse now. I ended up spending a lot more and bought a 4 seater long travel (20") with a V8 and I just couldn't have been happy with anything less plush. Safety is my #1 concern, and this TIG welded chromo chassis is a lot safer than anything else I saw at the time.

Right now, everything is Covid pricing. Sure there are a few deals out there, but most everything is overpriced by 50% or more. My criteria is: something that is safe, would be fun to drive (enough power and most importantly a smooth ride) and a good value. NOT a car that sold for $50K new in 2007, $38k used in 2011 and is now for sale for the low, low price of only $80k, 5th hand. Yes, I have a long memory.

If I were in the market now, I would wait until next season, maybe the end of next season, and you'll probably see vehicles for sale for a LOT less than they're selling for now. I'd feel pretty screwed if I paid $8k now, dumped another $3k or $4k into repairs (trannies always need rebuilding when you buy it, mine was no exception) maybe shock repairs, etc and then find out next year I couldn't get $5k for it. Worse case scenario, you buy it now, the trans needs a new R&P and based on current parts availability, it sits on the floor in your garage or trailer for 9 months waiting for parts. That's a real possibility, just read the threads in sand rail tech.

Another option is a 4 seat Speed UTV. It's built like a sand rail (better than some, if you look closely enough) has a 120" wheel base, 77" track width and 25" of VERY smooth travel. They are not in production yet, but some might get delivered by the end of the season, depending on supply chain issues, which everyone is having. I believe there are 4 or 5 spots for resale that are in the first 800 or 1,000 4 seaters. They're very roomy, have more travel than most long travel sand rails (25" vice 20"), they can run at 225hp on 91 or 300hp on E85 and you can use them all year round, in the dirt, trails, rock crawling, the dunes, everything except tight forest trails. On top of that, they can be financed. If you buy one of the pre-ordered units, you're getting it at the original price, not today's prices and nothing comes close to the value they represent. They come with 32" tires, beadlocks, hydraulic power steering, one of a kind front diff/bulkhead, a suspension beyond anything else out there, carbon fiber seats, a real alternator, 3 speed sequential CVT gearbox and diffs designed by Albins (the best), 10" LCD dash that can mirror your phone GPS map etc etc. Check out the Speed UTV website for all of the technical specs and YT has plenty of videos of prototypes floating through the desert whoops at 85 mph and jumping over dunes in Glamis.

If I had to choose between 1980s tech, no travel for $8k cash, or a state of the art 300hp turbo SxS for about $32K (financeable) I'd pick the SxS. It's designed by a guy who has raced and designed trophy trucks for 30 yrs and he used his trophy truck as the basis for this SxS. Hell, I still have my 4 seat long travel rail and I ordered a 2 seat Speed UTV for the desert and trails.

We all live only once. Life is too short to settle and regret not buying the best we could have had for whatever reason, be it a few dollars more, or not realizing what a great value it is, or listening to uninformed people.

Quick story. About 10 yrs ago, I was camped in Ocotillo Wells with some friends and a guy with a family of quads in the neighboring camp came over and asked if he could come over later and ask some questions. A few hrs later, I gassed up and drove over to his camp to see if they wanted a ride. His wife jumped in front, the hubby and oldest son sat in the back and I buckled them all in, gave the safety speech and gave them all headsets. I told them I was going to keep increasing speed and if they felt nervous or wanted to slow down, just speak up and I'd slow down right away.

We got onto San Felipe wash and I accelerated and asked if they were ok a couple of times but nobody said a word as we floated through the wash at 95 mph like we were on a smooth hwy (not S86.) I turned around and we drove back at 100 mph and pulled into camp. I said, "What do you think?" His wife said, "That was the most expensive ride we've ever had! We're selling all of the quads, saving our money ad we're going to get one of these! I LOVE it! I had no idea anything could be so smooth!" I was grinning at the husband when it dawned on me - he planned it out! He knew once she rode in one, SHE would decide they had to have one, he wasn't going to argue her into it! Very smart man!

Anyway, that's my opinion, I honestly hope it helps.

Disclaimer: the preceding is my honest opinion based on current prices, past technology and Speed UTV technical specs. It was not meant to upset any VW owners or rile up any RG haters.
Long story short. Sold the VW rail when it was used up. Enter kids. Got sxs. Wife says eff this we’re getting a long travel. Honey, you know it’s not that easy-different trailer-different tow vehicle- she said- so, what’s the problem-GOD DAMN- she’s awesome!

Watched a few Youtube Videos and for what I need, I think that a VW is the ticket for me this season.  Now time to shop so please PM me if you Gents see a 4 Seater for sale under $7000.  Thanks

Anyhow…I wish every sand car owner started out with a zero travel rig and actually learned how to drive prior to going bigger (V8 / Subi, 20” of travel). I’d look for a non-turbo 1915 or bigger (no bigger than 2180) IRS and front coil-overs if possible. Nothing wrong with a good turbo motor but the possibility of trans issues goes up. Electronic ignition is a plus as well. Some of my most memorable rides were in VWs…

There are always decent VW powered rails around that 7-8k price range, that you can have plenty of fun in! Suspension wont be crazy.... so obviously more fun when the dunes are smooth.

I have a vw car, and this thing is a rocket.... Biggest thing you want to look for is one that is tuned well and runs good.... a lot of these motors are never dialed in and run like crap.

He already has a deposit on a Speed UTV.  He is just trying not to miss the dune season.

If you can score a 2 seat Johnny Speed and Chrome VW rail that would be the ticket.  Those cars are a blast in the smooth dunes.   Obviously when it gets in the rough stuff you have to slow down or book your kidney transplant surgery.  LOL!

We use to camp with a guy that had a 2 seat JSC.  He would dune it everywhere.

Yes, I found out after he started this thread, but that's something he chose not to mention in his original post.

I'm glad he didn't need any convincing from me as to the merits of the Speed UTV.

He says he wants a 4 seater. I'm assuming he wants the kids to ride with him, so a 2 seater won't do any good.
