SXS Weld Porn or Weld Horror?

I will say I was surprised about what I saw from what brands.
Why were you surprised? I don't see anything that really surprises me in those pics, based on my experience.

Ouch!! Some of those look like painted over bubblegum, boogers or JB weld. Still way better than I can weld. That second picture has me  :classic_blink:

A weld doesn't have to be pretty to be strong. It's not surprising to see this at the price point at which they are sold. Fwiw I have the cost of a new SxS wrapped up in material and weld labor for my new chassis alone. You want a fully tig welded SxS it's gonna cost way more than 30k.

I also want to add that pretty welds are not necessarily the strongest either. Youtube has made everyone a weld inspection expert these days.

I would love to see a video of the speed robots welding through a darkened lens.  Those welds almost look like the long pulse welds some guys manually do to look like a stack of dimes.  Usually robotic welds look more like toothpaste out of the tube with no weave or cursive "E" etc.

I agree that people weld to try to make it look like their buyers expect, not what is necessarily the strongest.

I was trying to leave Speed out of this as we have a whole thread to be critical about Speed. But to be far if we want to bring Speed in, here is a good comparison of what they had on the preproduction cars at the show vs the new test chassis.

Same locations as what you showed. This is the bolt gate gusset. I think Robby said that corner will be welded. The bottom right of the photo shows the new rear door latch mount.

This was the closest picture I could get to the location of your second photo  Either way it’s 100x improved.

Easy  since those are handmade protyotypes - production will be closer to what @rockwood showed

all the manufactures weld look like crap i'm surprised that we dont see alot of weld failures in atvs and the utvs.   robbie is holding their suppliers to a higher standard and he has to he is pushing to a performance market if anything on his machine is sub par he will get crucified on the internet. most of the other manufacturers sell to a much broader band of costumer's  farmers  ranchers ect.

I personally wouldn’t buy a SxS but that’s just me.  Junk? I dunno, they have proven to be pretty dependable machines overall, when used within their design limitations.

Their welds certainly are not causing any issues.

Go outside and look at the bird poop and caterpillars on your cars and trucks. And im not talking bugs. Toyota ford and nissan were having some serious weld failures on their trucks. The automated stuff here in america is much better.

@Sausage450r

Yep. Lots of gross welds on OE vehicles. Jeep JL has decent ones:

But, in the end, robo welds are cheap. If Robby figured out a way to make pretty robo welds at the same speed, definitely cool.

@NIKAL I’m sure I wasn’t the only one who thought to post The Bolt Seen Round the World. Leaving Speed out of this thread would be favoritism. If it’s on a SxS, good and bad welds alike, they should be posted. The chassis you posted looks good. Hopefully that’s what’s delivered to customers.
