Help with a new (to me) truck

If your looking at a a dodge the 05 to 07 is the best.  07 was a 1/2 year and imo the best of them all (if you get the early 5.9)

Finding one that does not have a bunch of miles is tough.  I have a 99 with 250k and my biggest concern is the PCM.  There are no good options if it dies.  In fact they are Uber hard to find.
Why the concern about the PCM? It's pretty much just a controller for the automatic transmission. I don't think the manual trucks even have one. I've spent a lot of time around these trucks and I've never heard of one failing. Do you mean ECM? Those are pretty solid too

I did mean PCM.  It does control all of the transmission function as well as other truck functions. My dodge guy said they don't fail very often, but if they do the only option is ebay...

I have a source for ECMs, which I have already had to replace due to grid heater issues  (common for diesel trucks).

Just bit the bullet myself,   good old engine issues with my 08 6.4 Ford... Again, caused me to be without a truck for a month. After weeks of searching, I only found 4 crew cab long bed diesel Fords in the entire state of California. Local banks will not finance vehicles from out of state unfortunately. Ended up with a 2017 F350 crew cab, long bed, diesel 6.7 platinum version. Truck is perfect exterior and interior. Only had 60,000 mi, but it set me back $77,000! My old truck has been paid off for some time and this $1,200 a month payment for the next 72 months is going to get old fast!! Still don't know what I'm going to do with my old truck, I've already replaced the motor once and it only lasted 60,000 mi now I have to do it again!!

Had a 04.5 Dodge with 5.9 and NV5600 6 speed manual.  Hands down the best truck but too small for my growing family of 5.  Just sold with 198k for high teens to a friend.  In May, bought a '21 Ram 3500 4wd long fleet crew out of Wyoming for $61k.  Took awhile to find what I wanted without a premium.  It's a tradesman but happy so far.  Has all the stuff and more my '04.5 Laramie had.  Only upgrades are HO/Aisin combo, 50 gallon fuel tank, 8" stereo, carpet & chrome bumpers.  Have about 7k on it with about 5k of it towing.  With 1075lbft, you don't worry about hills or passing anymore, just how much fuel you want to use doing it.

Hint:  If you build it on the RAM website and say search inventory.  It will show you trucks that are ordered and which dealership they are headed to.  I call the Ram dealer in WY and asked about the truck before they the sales guys even knew it was coming in.  They received it 8 days later and the process was already done.  Still had another salesman try to buy it out from under me though.

Covid mandates went away.
This and 1 was 5yrs old with 120k miles. The other is so new it won’t be built for a few months. And the new is just 10k more.

kind of a no brainer really.

Anyway the OP can have a new f250 for under 50k

That allot better than buying a 10-15yr old truck with 100k miles.

Truck I ordered  has 18k 5th wheel rating.

It reads as he is only considering diesels though.

It was just food for thought.
If I had deep pockets I would 100% own a diesel.
There is a reason the majority of the newer used diesels for sale are right at 100,000 miles. Nobody wants to own one out of warranty.

If you get a diesel old enough not to have the emissions crap. That’s a old truck that’s probably well used.
Dodge will have transmission concerns

Chevy you might have to worry about injectors. ( I would take this gamble over the dodge transmission)

Ford you are in the 6.0 6.4 years. Pure junk.
Ford 7.3 diesel great engine. Power is Meh... Rest of the truck is 20yrs old and looks like it.

Just consider the pros and cons is my suggestion.

Considering the pros and cons is the point of this thread. Before I commit to a truck I would like to know my options. A gasser would be one of them I guess, but my focus has been on diesel. A brand new truck for low 50s is a great deal though

You ordered a new one?

Are you able to get everything you want on it?

For yah yah's I have priced out new Chevy 2500 HD's and yeah you can order it, but won't come certain things due to the chip shortage. One think I love on mine is the heated and cooling seats, Not available on new models cause of the chip shortage.

Also...the 5-10K markup just because. :simrak:

I ordered a 2022 f250 with 7.3 today.
low 50’s
This.  Godzilla will have way more power and almost as much torque as anything $40k and under with a diesel.  Yes, 600lb-ft is nice, but 4 gears aren't.  I had a 5.9 CTD Dodge.  Beast.  But couldn't pull my 13k toyhauler in 3rd up the grade leaving San Diego, and 2nd was worth about 50mph if you really liked sitting on the fuel cut. 7.3 will have less torque, but 10 gears to multiply it, so will likely be much more pleasant/capable tow pig other than fuel economy.

If you order, 99% of the dealers will do MSRP + applicable rebates at delivery since it doesn't cut into their allocation.  4-5 month wait when we ordered in October.

You can order whatever you want.  High zoot options might lengthen your build time.  No markup.

if i were looking for another diesel id be looking for a ford 99-02 7.3, i owned 2 of them and they were great trucks, regret selling the last one i had. a 06-07 classic duramax, or if i wanted newer id be looking at the 17-18 duramaxes, but id dpf delete em for sure. on dodges i have a 02 24v dually with a 6sp manual and its been a great truck overall, but if i wanted something nicer id look at something with aisian trans and it would be deleted as well. lately though i have been on the hunt for squarebody chevy's, so that will be my next truck purchase 😉

I got 2% under invoice 🥳

I just wanted to toss it out there for you. Gassers arent for everyone. I rarely drive so 3-4mpg difference sucks but money wise I’m still way ahead. if I deleted my black appearance group and center console I would be at 49k.

Trust me, look in Utah/Idaho for a truck.

I just bought a 2019 Ford Raptor for $58k with 25,000 miles, same truck here in Ca/AZ is $70K.  Worth a flight and drive home......I know it isn't a diesel, but the pricing is quite a bit different.
