1964 Dodge A-100 Hot rod sort of rat rod build thread.

Standing here at the heart doc with isotope dye in my blood getting ready to get on the treadmill for a nuclear heart test. So I'm bored. Came up with a different idea for the inside of my rear wheel wells. Have a piece of 1/8 inch thick steel plasma cut. On one side it would follow the inside radius of the wheel well. On the other side it would be scalloped like a beadlock wheel. Then accentuate each bump just a little bit and then for each hole do a dimple die. Probably do a small half inch dimple die on each of those holes. Then lay another piece of strap at least .090 thick on edge and run it around the radius of the plasma cut piece. Meaning I would have to bend that into the radius. Maybe use a torch to do that. Then that would give me something to attach my 18 gauge wheel well too. Weld it all together with holes and spot welds. Then I have an 1/8 inch thick edge that I can put a real nice radius on with the grinder. Of course the 18 gauge steel for the wheel well will get bead rolled with some kind of pattern.

I really like the speed shop shop truck. Just a simple rectangular pattern with radiused corners. I'm not sure how big of a piece I will be able to fit into our bead roller though. I keep coming back to this simple pattern for those rear fender Wells. I have a feeling I won't be able to rotate that full sheet of steel for the wheel well in our small bead roller.

Check out the car at 12:16. I think it is a Suzuki Samurai. Internet says an 80" wheelbase.  :shocker:   That thing is nuts.

Another 8 hours to finish this end. First time I ever tig welded aluminum. Just spotting it together. I will let one of my guys in the shop who is a certified welder weld all this thing together. I'm going to add a 1 inch extender on each end so it flows better.

Found an old shroud with two spal. fans in it. 1640 CFM each so 3200 total. I will cut this thing apart and scavenge the fans out of it. Saves me $400.

I need to have a tight 90 where the throttle body is behind the cab. I don't have a lot of space there. Can't find a 2 and 1/2 to 4 in 90° reducer. But I did find a 3 inch to 4 inch. So the inlet from the turbo into the intercooler will be two and a half inch and coming out of the intercooler to the throttle body will be 3 in pipe.

I have been dreaming about these rear fender Wells for months and months and never really had a design I loved. That is until today. To start with where the blue tape is I would bead roll a long rectangle on the inside and outside of the fender. Then in the middle take my little rusty wagon 60s Jimi Hendrix vibe logo and expand it. Probably 36 long in by six or seven inches tall. Then bend and wrap that around the fender and attach it with some 10/32 nuts and bolts. And then I cut out my scalloped trim piece on the inside. Those holes would get dimple died with a small half inch dimple die. And I might bring that fender in a little closer to the lip of the tire.

are you going to leave the inside of the wheel well open like that..

are you going to leave the inside of the wheel well open like that..
Yes. You will see the inside of the tire and all the suspension. Right now the truck has no air in the bag so that ride height it will come up about an inch and a half. I have a 2x4 between the cardboard and the tire so I might drop that fender well down a little bit.

The width of the fender well will be narrower as well. It won't be quite that close to the bedside either. I could also take that scalloped ring and add about an inch or two and make it thicker to cover part of the tire.

Full day of welding and he almost made it.. Love how this thing came out. I might build a frame and bring it up in the air and move it away from the exhaust a little bit. Hopefully I can build a shroud and not cover up all the welds.

Cut that shroud and I think these fans are going to work just fine. The one thing I'm not sure about is if the weight of the fans in the center can sit on the intercooler with some foam. Or if I need to make a structure and have this thing floating above all the fins. Going to stop over at turbo's direct and buy my 50 mm blow off valve so I think I'll ask Mike what he thinks. My buddy is able to cut aluminum on his plasma cutter so if I do make a framework and have these floating above I could have that cut out of maybe quarter inch aluminum for that plate.

Not quite sure how I'm going to seal this front section after cutting that big air box out. I'm still not going to have enough room and will need to shorten the steering column. Still need to do more cutting and sneaking on it so I don't damage the front of the truck.

Well I cut it back a little more. I think I'm going to reinstall the screens and then try to fabricate panels to weld in here. Keeps my heat well away from the front of the truck when welding. This will take a little while.

First piece for the right half to block those front vents made. Silver color is zinc weld through coating.

Left side ready to panel Bond and weld it in. After the Rust-Oleum primer sets up for a minimum of 48 hours.

Good start including bead rolling on the side for the right hand corner. This piece won't go up quite as high as the left. Not near as much rust.Still need to weld in a couple more pieces. It is sitting a little crooked in the picture. I need to hold it down with some weights when I go to weld it in.
