WTF, how does this happen?

I would love to see how they untangled that mess, a couple of winches would be awesome to pull them apart.

Well at least that's five people that won't /shouldn't have this happen again.

I'm always far enough back to see this stuff happen. As long as you can see the line the leader is taking you're close enough.

Also, what radios are for. Leader calls out danger.
Pretty sure if the leader had a radio he was too busy trying not to crash to actually use it.  Plus somebody's wife was probably on that channel chit chatting about what they were going to wear to the ledge that night for anybody to actually get any good from a radio.

Blind crest on a transition.  I can see how the first 2-3 cars can pile up like that,   The last 2 in the wreck don't have much of an excuse though.

  Sh!t happens, the dunes bite.
THIS

What amazes me most is the PPoG who would never have this happen to them are forgetting.  There are two kinds of riders, ones who have crashed and the ones that will crash.

Also this was a slow speed crash, I have seen a crash like this up close and the cars didn't look half as good. My CSI Glamis experience tells me that people hit the brakes and slid into one another more that hitting at full speed

I did lead a ride once and came off a drop off on my quad.....stalled the bike and BAM. Guy running 2nd hit me hard. He's got a scar to prove it. Peace
Quad rides it happens.

That's one big ass witch's eye:

I can see how none of them knew it was there until it was too late.  Could they have avoided it?  Sure.

But... We've all seen them.  Some of us have crashed in them.  Some of us barely missed them and get a case of the piss shivers knowing how close we were to a yard sale.  Looks like minor damage and everyone walked.  Good day in the dunes and great recovery effort.

Most of my conversation on the radio is 2 to 3 words at a time, go right, go left, watch that. Even if too late for yourself warn others. I hate when I listen to people talk about last night dinner or how it seems to be time for happy hour.

When I call something out, it is too late for #2, but does save #3 and back.  #2's job is to clean up my mistakes as leader.  I always tell everyone, I can only lead a group if I trust #2 can drive.  In this case I would never blame the leader, it is everyone behind him that messed up.

I can see this happening pretty easy. SXS vehicles put out a very friendly roost. You can ride up close behind your buddy and not be getting blasted. There will be times if your buddy comes to a stop there is simply not enough time and space to slow down. I trip out watching pro racing because they will swap lines side to side and miss each other by inches. Because they know the leader is not going to suddenly slow down.

The witches eye or a group of broke down people with no spotter is a tough variable. I broke my back years ago in glamis and never rode the same. I dont trust any blind crest. I follow advice that Mellen gave years ago. He said something like "dont drive faster than you can see." I ride that way now. I will slow down to 2nd gear and be doing 5mph and turning right as i crest a blind dune. Once you can see again its back on the throttle. I have the benefit of probably the best view you can have in glamis. Standing up on a dirt bike. My field of vision is huge and uninhibited. I heard strapped into a SXS or sandcar is a learning curve because youre low to the ground and have a front end blocking your view.

WOW! Just saw the video. I want a winch! Peace

We are all sand cars. The roost is enough that seems to make a comfortable space between cars and nobody in our group loves eating sand that much or driving blind. Leading I always have time to notify others and they have time to avoid whatever they need to. That said, I'm now building a new lower front arm from our last trip, and no one else in our group is.

I'm usually number 1 and have a solid number 2. We are both in rails and the sxs's follow us. My group bitched for years about my 4' whips, they like watching what the whips do on a transition and that gives them a good idea of what to expect. They were all happy when I switched to the taller whips.

I am not going thru hundreds of comments on Social Media for details, but how in the hell does this happen?  I have been duning for 35 years now, have lead hundreds of rides and this have never come close to happening?  Is it the blind leading the blind??  I have stuffed my car into a hole once or twice :classic_biggrin: , but my #2 has always avoided running into the back of me.

I am really starting to believe people nowadays don't care about their rides, the attitude that insurance will take care of everything is certainly prevalent with some.
