Why Gas Engines Are Far From Dead - Biggest EV Problems

A Camry is probably 500+ lbs lighter than a Model 3 with the "350 mile" battery, and probably gets close to 500 miles range, and can refuel in the time it takes to take a whizz.
I'm sick of Tesla's everywhere.

We are now looking at Sub-Compact SUV's to replace our Pilot, already have a Mini-Van so smaller nice SUV is the next "Grocery getter", they are all around 30 mpg and in low 20k range.

Eff EV.

I am currently in the market for a new Honda Accord.  A hybrid version gets 47 city /48 hwy and gas version gets 30 city /38 hwy so I took a peak at the hybrid.  One major problem is the battery itself.  The Honda hybrid battery life expectancy is warrantied for up to 8 years or up to 100,000 miles and cost to replace is north of $14,000.
See, that's half the cost of the damn car.  :ng:

Truck still have a long way to go.  My '21 Ram 3500 came stock with a 50 gallon tank.

Daytime or night time? Is the radio on ?
To clarify: this comment was for the Camry, answers below:

Daytime only. If at night, high beams are always on in addition to the turn signal.
Radio permanently set to only tune in to NPR from the factory.

If you take it to the dealer and buy a brand new one, yep.  Refurbs are much cheaper:

And generally can be swapped in 2-3 beers with regular tools.

I am neither anti or pro EV, I just believe that it shouldn't be crammed down our throats, and they are using our tax money to eventually force us all to comply.

And lying to the public to try and drive acceptance of green energy is getting old. We are nowhere close to having the infrastructure to validate what the progressive politicians want you to believe. I worked on a project 10 - 12 years ago building a large battery backup for a distribution feeder serving thousands of customers. It was funded mostly with gov grants with the DOE being the largest grant. It was tested once and totally failed. Now I know that some folks will say, batteries have come a long way since then, and they are partially correct. For large scale projects like i worked on, the engineer in charge of that project told me when I retired a couple years ago that they still aren't close to making a scale backup system work for any length of time. So in other words, the push for a green society (A catchy label to justify a transition to socialism) is far outpacing the technology needed to make this entire scam work. It may work in the future, but it will take many years to get there, if at all.

Again, not a fan of EVs myself because they're not useful to me...

But gasoline cars burn to the ground at a much higher rate...  Overall, however, almost no vehicles are burning to the ground:

Your brain likes the tech behind it all....this is not sexy! I blame yore DNA, you were born that way.

I'll just add to my previous post the astronomical cost this "transition" will cost all of us. I would love to see how much tax money is being poured into this mess right now, and it's going to get worse. All cost, subsidies, tax incentives, grants for research and development of new technologies, ect. I read the 1st quarter earnings call for the company I retired from and the CEO and CFO mentioned federal subsidies many times during the call that they are relying on to make renewable's work.I truly believe that number will blow your mind, and as I said, it will grow exponentially over a short period of time.

The grid is nowhere close to being able to sustain this rapid growth. I've read that the increased load on the grid if we go mostly EV will be 30%. While for some, that isn't a large amount. But it's tremendous. Most utilities normally see 1% to 2% growth year over year. It takes major capital investments to keep up with that very modest growth. Now add an additional 30% in a relatively short period of time, and you have an epic amount of $$$ to keep up.

That battery is still $2,000 with a 3 year warranty for a 15 year old model.

KBB puts a '07 Accord Hybrid with 150,000 miles on it at $5,500.  That is Private Party in "very good" condition.

Still almost 1/2 the cost of the vehicle.

It's $1295.  Newer cars don't need it yet enough to be worth remanufacturing the packs, but even then, most of the hybrid packs are similar in cost unless it's a plug-in model.

In any case, what's your point?  An AC compressor swap for that car is $900-1200.  It's an old car, almost any repair is a significant percentage of the vehicle's value.

Hence the 3 year warranty I specified.

You are correct, any repair would make you question whether keeping the car on the road is worth the investment.

Also, I would estimate that by the time I have the car 15 years and 150,000 miles that I would not be on my first battery replacement.

Ah, word.

Nah, they usually last about that long. Warranty is 8 years, 100k miles.

Most people I know that are driving around in Full EV's are the type of people that don't own their car more than 5 years, thus warranties and battery life mean nothing to them............this is the people I know, but someone is buying the used cars?

What is the highest MPG Car out there right now? That's not a Hybrid or EV?

@Fireballsocal how are you liking that 200HP 0-60 in 6 sec Prius Prime your driving these days?

I need a commuter for 80 miles round trip 5 days a week.
