What’s it worth?? 1986 250r

Wow…. Didn’t think I’d have so many quick responses. I used to ride in the dunes as a kid following this bike. Just trying to decide if nostalgia and sentimental value mean enough for me to buy it. He has no idea what it’s worth so I told him I’d get some opinions and go from there . GD is a good place for a bike like this.

Just give him $1250 Cash and split it with him! You can own it together....split all repairs and upgrades...I did that with Coop on a ATC 250R and it worked out great!!!

He’s done riding at this point…. Moving on to his next chapter. I like where your head is at though.

Another question…. How is the parts market for these quads. Say clutch, gaskets, seals, crank….. all the hard parts. Are they still being made in the aftermarket? If one were to buy it and have some issues, can parts be found? Being that it’s 36 years old…

Go to rocky mountain and load it as a saved bike. Then scroll through the pages of aftermarket parts. Some popular older models have hundreds of parts.

Then click OEM and see whats available and price difference to aftermarket.

I really like Tusk brand that RM sells. Things like clutch perch and brake pedals can be bought cheap and its good quality from what ive bought.

Some parts will be available, They use them still to this day on something so you can find them. Some parts will be available aftermarket only. Some will require hours of scrounging the internet to find.

For instance, Clutch plates and springs. Should be no problem. Brake pads no problem, front or rear brake master cylinders, your on E-bay searching. Plastic's your going to be looking at aftermarket only.  Crank bearing, pistons basic seals and bearings is going to be easy enough but some of the smaller items you might need to get creative.  The big seal behind the stator would be easier to find then say the one that goes into the shift shaft. Wrist pin bearing should be ok from Honda direct but something like the needle bearings on the swing arm might take some searching.

What you have is to nice to part out, not nice enough to get top dollar for and for a person who is looking to do a full restoration on a bike you have one that will be over his budget for a starting point.

Give your buddy $2,500 for the bike with the right of first refusal of $2,500 if and when you go to sell it.

I almost dropped 10k on a tecate 3 wheeler a couple weeks ago, just couldn't do it, but it will only go up in value I"m sure.

I could see that if it were an 87 model if those really even exist

i sold this one for 4500 a few months ago and it took a few months to sell...lots of 4k offers but I held out for 4500.

I like the offer him 2500 and fix it up…. But I feel like I might feel guilty

Protect your main bottom cases at all costs. Dont even think about riding without a case saver or with an effed up 30 year old chain. Everything is in abundant supply except the main cases

Damn!! This is GOLD for a forum comment!! I've seen chain snaps cost hundreds to thousands in damage before. Good looking out right here! Especially for those of you riding with crusty chains! Good one bro!

Indeed…. That was awesome advice. I think I’m pulling the trigger on it. He’s got a ton of extra parts for it and wants a bit more i think. I’ll let you guys know if we don’t come to an agreement.

Banshee chain guide is a good addition too. Just weld a mount right onto the swing arm. The one thing 250r’s are notorious for is throwing chains.

100%.  Picked up a 86 TRX250R basket case in need of small case repair.  Billet cases are now available but $$$.

I have an 89 that I bought new. The plastics are beginning to crack and are very hard to replace.

The gas tank is showing signs of failing and very expensive if you can find one. The rest of the

mechanical parts are not to bad to find. Still love my old two smoke!

I think it’s worth more than you think.  Facebook has many 250r groups. Like at least 8. They even vet out sellers and scammers.  Don’t run it unless you pressure test the bottom end seals. I would just change them out for safety.   Use a 520 o ring chain. You will be fine.  I say 5k shipped to the east coast. Not California too many out here. Stock plastics in perfect shape are gold.

We had one that was being sold for a friend. 86, in awesome condition. However it sat for 15 years in a shed. Took 3 months to sell and after 2 months of being for sale for $4500 with no bites had to lower it to $3000. The market isn’t as hot as you are being told.

Wide variety of pricing for sure… I know it’s a niche bike that could take forever to sell if you’re looking for top dollar. I offered him $3k MAX… he’s a very close friend but still wants a fair price. He hasn’t agreed yet. There was one that popped up the other day in as good or better condition. Original owner , very little use for $2500. Ad was down within 30 minutes of posting.
