Upgrading Honda 250 ex’s.

Wanted to get my daughter a 110 raptor Yamaha or a 250 but we ended up with the Honda 250.

If we didn’t I’m sure this is what I would’ve ended up doing with the raptor.

I guess I'm gonna be buying a 250 raptor at some point.. LOL

I've read good things on that CT motor package.

The 2011 Raptor 250SE has the reservoir shocks. Good shock out the door but also build able. That's the year and model I would look for.
Yamaha also made a Raptor 125. Same years. I believe they are the same size as a 250 but small motor.

I'm 63 and ride one of those.... sometimes. I'm 200# My bike is a Warrior, but I ride all of my bikes. I trimmed the paddles half way, w/a sawzall. It allows the bike to spin the tires in 3rd and 4th. It worked way better after I trimmed the tires....to about 1/2" tall. I would have them ride that bike for, at least, another 5 years. If they can't keep up, it isn't the bikes fault. The only thing that I have problems it tall dunes.

I have been down this road twice now my kids are 20 and 14. They started Suzuki 50s at two then LT 80 then a totally modified jack moore LT 80. Then the blaster which was a mistake everyone I know that had a blaster called it their biggest mistake. There are some aftermarket race quads that you can buy. DDR comes to mind. They’re the only sand suitable quad that can make it Glamis. The Blaster gets around fast, but its suspension is so bad it can’t handle its speed. Put a long travel kit on it. Spend a shit ton of money still was garbage. We stopped going because I was worried he was going to get hurt trying to keep up or just playing around on his own. Our group owns approximately 20 Honda 250r’s. We have been riding these things since the 90s most 310+ cc, when my kids were 11-12, we put one of 250r’s back to a stock unported cylinder, stock 34mm carb. Left the pipe on it. It’s pretty docile with some 20-10-10 8 paddle scat tracks add a little extra air or a seven paddle would be perfect. Ours have aftermarket shocks and the bikes ride pretty low , probably the lowest center gravity of any quad you can get. They slide really well and are the least likely quad to flip that I have seen. Put some Nerf bars on it until they’re at least 5 feet tall. Tell the kid to respect the bike or it will bite them in the ass and you’ll take it away if you see them doing stupid shit. The bikes are super reliable and if he’s like us, he’ll never want or need a different bike. They are probably also the lightest ATV..

Reading the 1st post again...

The TRX250EX is just fine for yore kid. Go online to RockymoutainATV or whatever aftermarket accessories catalog you like and order him a matching set (same company) Baja front bumper, nerf bars and rear grab bar (lil mate cooler type), get the twist throttle. Those are easy items and cheap modifications that will allow you time with him, making that quad cooler in his eyes and time spent together building it up.

Next, open that air box up, toss the lid and stick a K&N on it. Pick an exhaust, a slip on is fine or a full system if you wanna spend money - either are more for looks and sound, then actual performance gains on that motor. Based on what set up you choose, you will need to re-jet the card. Go to a slightly smaller profile rear tire (MX Style) and it will feel much snappier.

You can widen the front and rear with wheel spacers, easy, cheap or go big with a Arm extender kit and new rear axle. IMHO wheel spacers are just fine unless your kid wants to go jump every hill he sees, all day long LOL. I've heard TRX300EX shocks and Banshee shocks fit as stock replacements, upgrades on the cheap.

Then you can get into the motor, but just like Rivermobster said...better suspension will build his confidence to use all that motor up to its potential. Too many people hop on a machine with more power then they can handle and get hurt.

This was a good source for allot of questions your asking....

The Suzuki ltz400s are lighter than the 250ex's...you could spend all that money on a 250 and still not be as good an all around quad as the 400.

LOL...yes yore right, I looked.

HON 385 vs SUZ 319.....that's a good bit of weight difference. Bet its that rear axle drive system.

So you are selling the raptors then?
The twins Raptor 250s are going up for sale after our Glamis trip. Could deliver to Havasu on the way home to Colorado. Would like to sell as a pair
But could separate though. $3400 for the 2011 special edition and $3000 for the 2009 250r.20240318_144939.jpg20241027_141450.jpg20240319_184806.jpg

I might hit you up for these towards the end of February

Keep your 250. Mine will keep up with a 350X ATC, and a Yamaha Warrior in the dunes. Of course, it won't climb like them. OH, the rider of the 350X weighs about 150# and my son and I both weigh 200#. We both ride the 250 behind the 2 350s.

The 250 is a wonderful bike...although, the length makes it rougher to ride.

The tires....22"tall x 11" wide straight cut paddles that are worn out (a kid, before us, rode them on asphalt, a lot) In the center, they are about 5/16" tall, 3/8"-1/2" on the edge. I've also run the diagonal paddles THAT WERE CUT TO ABOUT 3/8"-1/2" (which matches the height of the straight cut paddles). I ran these paddles and then cut a junk pair that I had. the un-cut paddles pulled up to 2nd gear better....BUT, the cut paddles pull 3rd, and 4th way better.

Bringing this back!

How's your boy progressing on this thing? What did you end up doing? @RiverDave

My son is rippin' on his and it's making me a proud papa! Now looking at upgrading him a little bit and leaning into simple stuff like exhaust, opening up the airbox, jetting and maybe the rev increaser cdi box or whatever that is. Research is iffy. Also found the suspension widener kits that allow bigger shocks like from 400s etc... and it just seems like stupid money can go in pretty quick. I already feel bad that he had to go up Olds at like 5mph because the paddles on it are worn the hell out hahaaaaa. I already have an ITP wheels setup for him going on asap. I love this little bike though. Probably the newest one of my fleet and I don't care to put him on any bigger bikes yet. I have plenty of 400s 450s and my 660 that he can grow into but for now, would love to build his confidence on this little thing and well wrenching together in the garage would be pretty cool, too.

I pretty much took the advice of everyone here and left them alone.

I do have the airbox off one of them with a filter attached direct to the carb. I have done that with all my quads when I was a kid.

They still run good. I’d like to get my son into something more aggressive on the quad front. My oldest daughter is probably gonna end up in a XX or some sort of two seat SXS.

Great updates. Nothing better than a kid getting great on a near stock Quad, let them outgrow it and REALLY learn to squeeze everything out of it, it makes the next jump much more fun and makes them a real rider.
Too many people don't really ride their machines; the machines ride them and kids or even adults get hurt.

The Family '84 ATC200S we had as kids came back into my garage...../time to give her a little love and get it back out to Glamis. I used to mob it to Comp hill and race up Comp at IDK, bout 12 mph but made it...LOL

Hell @Bansh88 rides his 3 Wheelers all over Glamis ;)

Some of the best times is on a 70 and seeing how far/high you can go.
Been eyeballing 110's lately. That bit of tire suspension makes a world of difference.
There's a blue one in my area I'd like to pull the trigger on.

Get a 185 or the later 200s - trust me.

110s are great, but slightly smaller. The H/L toogle on them was rad, but you already have 70s....go big to a 185/200 and big ole ballon knobbies.
