Chinese Balloon Fiasco

If we can take a picture from a satellite and can read the license plate on a car, why would you need to spy with a balloon that can and will be spotted ?  What are they gaining by a "low" level semi guided pass of the Arctic circle down into Montana that they couldn't get from a satellite? Sure seems pretty risky way to spy these day's One you will get caught, two your spy gear is going to be captured and lastly everyone now will think your doing this more than you are already are.

This was just a test and Sleepy Joe failed to understand the assignment

It's hard to get 3D data from a satellite. I'm guessing that is what they're doing. They probably have all the data they would ever need from satellite and are now getting a closer look. Because they can

Google Earth's "3D" is like a 3 year old drawing pictures with their eyes closed with a dried up magic marker in terms of accuracy

Well what did they learn? Wind currents. Will we respond? Response time, Probably had air sampling devices that can collect air samples. We sent/send balloons over russia and china for years to find out if they were testing nukes or other weapons based on air samples. If china has ideas of war, no doubt first strike would be chemical/biological. And it appears a device would go completely unnoticed/unmolested until its over montana or the eastern seaboard.
 

They now know wind currents and rate of spread. From our media and social media the see americas attitude and ineptness on matters of defense and understanding

All stuff their satellites don’t collect.

the most important thing was. We may have missed it. We did nothing. And 80% all the american keyboard jockies are laughing and joking haha no big deal. We painted ourselves paper tigers

Late 2019 into 2020 was just a test for the real thing, a successful one I might add.

 
I agree with the OP.  I was wondering why it wasn't shot down immediately over Montana, and also why they destroyed the equipment which could have revealed many important things.  Our government is not what it used to be.

Not only that if they wanted to hide it they would have painted it blue to match the sky. White stands out, everyone can see it. DON~~~
