I've been following this off and on since it hit the news. Still wonder why they did not do anything when it was over Alaska and when it went clear across Canada. Bizarre! 

The excuse that they were worried that someone on the ground is total BS. They even used kindergartens in Montana as justification why it was too dangerous to shoot it down. 

I just watched the video several times of the balloon being shot. It appears that they shot the equipment suspended below the balloon. Why would they shoot the equipment that they claim to want to recover for analysis? Do we not have the capability to strike only the balloon to minimize damage to the equipment?

While writing this, they said that they used a heat seeking missile which homed in on the equipment they purport to want to analyze. They did not use radar//laser guided missiles. Seems odd to me.

 
Hey, Potato had to interrupt the Penta-gone's drag queen weekend, and annual trans panty raid to take out a balloon.

They waited because they caught it too late. Should have been shot down over the Aleutian islands but they missed it. Waiting was a save face come up with justification. You bet your azz they want it intact. Now they can say gee it was just a weather balloon, we’d show you but darnit there isnt much left. There are not many attack aircraft capable of 60k feet. Mostly static target is much harder to hit with a high speed fixed wing. I’d like to think we have capability of extreme targeting, but at that altitude, its very tough

 
i dont understand why the just couldn't send a few 0.50 cal rounds and let it slowly deflate and recover it. the have to have planes that fly at least that high the concord flew at 60k

 
My theory is that CCP (chinese communist party) has dirt on Hunter (all the vids of him and underaged girls on the laptop) so biden is basically their biatch.  He was forced to politically do something, so he agrees with Xi Xiang Pin (however the f you spell his name) to let the surveillance balloon do a flyover to get the data it needs, then @FJB saves some face by shooting it down.   Same reason he can't say no to Zelensky on Ukranian war funds.  They got too much dirt on him....

I cant think of a single aircraft that flies 60k feet with a .50 cal

There were rumors the Canadians fired at it with .50 cal and it didn't do anything

Google sez both f-22 and f-35 can get up into the 60k ft altitude range, maybe not sustained or whatever, looks like both have 20mm or 25mm guns, and are available at the very least in Alaska, Utah, New Mexico. Swiss cheese the damn balloon and go recover the payload over Montana or wherever. They just lack the stones and certainly the brains to do it.

This is hilarious. It can’t be called spying if you know it’s there. That’s freely giving information. But what do I know?

It’s pretty funny to watch all the things that go on in politics. Man can’t direct his own step…
