I've been following this off and on since it hit the news. Still wonder why they did not do anything when it was over Alaska and when it went clear across Canada. Bizarre!
The excuse that they were worried that someone on the ground is total BS. They even used kindergartens in Montana as justification why it was too dangerous to shoot it down.
I just watched the video several times of the balloon being shot. It appears that they shot the equipment suspended below the balloon. Why would they shoot the equipment that they claim to want to recover for analysis? Do we not have the capability to strike only the balloon to minimize damage to the equipment?
While writing this, they said that they used a heat seeking missile which homed in on the equipment they purport to want to analyze. They did not use radar//laser guided missiles. Seems odd to me.
