so basically, my old turbo was old, getting some blow by and the actuator was sticking when the truck was cold(1st starts after sitting for a while). This was causing OBDII low boost codes. I replaced it with a brand new one from Garrett(thinking it was best to buy NEW from the manuf) and now the damn thing is surging. You can hear it plain as day when you're on the gas or any time the motor is under load. Its a whooshing sound and the harder i'm on it, the faster/louder it gets. It also acts like the waste gate opens at idle and sounds like its purging(constant bleed off) Did I just get a lemon for a turbo maybe? This sucks if so because this is a chit job to do in the driveway! Plus I called the place I bought it and they said all claims are handled directly through Garrett and it could be a couple weeks from the time they get it. WTF, am I not supposed to go to work for a couple weeks?!? Any help or tips would be appreciated. I'm actually contemplating trying to rebuild the old one myself and just returning this one if it's bad.

Doubt it's a defective turbo if it's a genuine Garrett unit.  Are you sure the VNT actuator is the same as OEM?

Otherwise, check obstructions to/from the turbo.  Maybe something's starving it for air or plugged up on the pressure side and causing your surging.

There is no wastegate. There is a union ring and fingers that need to be properly clocked. Sounds like the clocking is off, check the vent pipe is clear. What led you to believe the turbo was bad? The fuel pumps are know  for working just fine at idle and not good enough under load. Check you’re getting 60psi fuel pressure under load, low pressure will do what you are describing.

wouldnt hurt to unplug your icp and see if it runs better as well if there is any oil on the connection replace the icp and the connector harness  (when you unplug icp the computer defaults to 700psi  base oil pressure assumption. )

Fwiw self wastegating at idle is normal lly dmax uses same turbo both my lly and 6.0 did that

…..unplug the ebp sensor too and see if surging goes away. Have you ever cleaned the tube or sensor? I deleted it on my 6.0 and 7.3

….and here is where the 6.0l gets a bad reputation… without software to do live diagnostics see what all the computer is seeing, you are just throwing parts at it

the biggest and only reason I swapped it was because it was getting a lot of blow by... tubes and intercooler seeing oil and oil residue blowing through the boot seals. I was afraid if I kept running it like that it would eventually run away and didn't like the thought of that at all. It wasn't surging prior to replacing the turbo nor was it purging off during idle. I have 350K on this thing and just need to make it last a little longer...

so I unplugged the ICP and test drove(went from 623 up to 870). Didn't change the surge issue... the truck itself is not surging while driving just that swooshing noise still coming from the turbo. I'll try the EBP when I get home and can pull the de-gas bottle out of the way to get to it

Yes I know 6.0 very well

clean ebp as stated but first change this map sensor hose, I bet it’s brittle. Clean the brass tube that goes into intake too. I almost guaranty it will be fine instantly. Those hoses crack and are brittle.

Thanks for the tip, the hose is actually new (less than a month old) haha! Saw that before too but will definitely check all the fittings again

My 7.3 goes clackity, clackity, rum, rum...clack, clack, clack......

Is this similar to the noise?

no, it is a constant whoosh, whoosh, whoosh, whoosh, sounds like a seal or o'ring spinning in one of the housings. I hear the same noise in the med and dental equipment I service when a bearing is spinning in an o'ring. I tried to record it but the stupid iphone mic just picks up everything and drowns it out

Ok, that video is a boost leak that my 6.0 developed when i picked it up after having a new hpop installed. Mechanic broke a couple exhaust studs (have to remove turbo and up pipes) and then decided to put it all back together with part of the gasket missing too afterward. Was thinkin maybe you have a leak somewhere.

Fwiw the vanes need to be clocked properly and i think there may even be a relearn procedure for the computer
