I spend my entire life riding quads at glamis until I bought a rzr in 2014. I had a lot of fun but thought my riding days were over with the cage in my life.

Last week at the Idaho Dunes, I had the chance to ride a friend's built Honda 450r and it has me considering building a new one just to have some fun on once in a while.

I am a little removed at this point, and it looks like some of the parts are tough to come by with the SXS taking over as the dominating rides in the dunes these days. Question being;

I always lean to the race side of things. I like the race parts and performance as well as the look. However, I am leaning towards building a Banshee this time around. I have access to some really clean machines at a reasonable price. It would be roll design/elka/carbon beadlocks, etc.

I am used to the handling and power of more modern fuel injected four strokes, and really enjoyed my air time. Will I be disappointed if i go the Banshee route? What else am I missing?

Some less ancient pics with my most recent LTR450:

I'm a Quad guy.

I would never buy a Banshee to ride in the dunes.

I'd stick with a Honda 450 or Yamaha 450 but that's just my opinion.

If you end up wanting to go the 4 stroke route, I will be listing my '06 TRX450 toward the end of the summer.

Any particular reason? Main concern for me is I know the 450's were designed with my riding style in mind.

I'd list handling as the number one issue with it being basically 1987 technology on the entire follow up.

Don't get me wrong, a BRAND NEW Banshee is an amazing quad... just not made for the kind of riding the later model four strokes are.

If you like to catch air and ride hard, there's only a few quads out there that were designed for that and have aftermarket support still... for it.

I'm still (figuratively) looking down the hallway at the newest Yamaha 450 I can find, soon. I rode my Ex's Kawasaki 450 a few years ago in Glamis and it was far more impressive than I thought it would be. I can't even imagine how a fuel injected Yamaha 450 would ride as I'm still an owner of Carb'd Honda 450's.

The FI YAM 450s are siccckkk. I'm a total HON fanboy too, but that quad I had last Vets sold me on the engine performance and powerband, it was too much motor for me actually, it like to scream and slam gears.

Suspension will need to be dialed, that wasn't as good as a HON.

My 2 cents.

If your a true Banshee guy, there isn't any way to change their mind, they are the best for drags and hill shooting 100%.

I happen to know a guy with an 05 450R that would be great for a build… was a full big bore, stock jug and just HRC’d now with Full pipe.

@nzulmer i see you guy. Let the quad god back out brother!!
Dude.....yes! I have been eyeing some kfx's out there. I'd be down to build another one. But the new yfz is where its at. Its built for how we ride and there is plenty of aftermarket stuff out there for it. If you want to mix gas, deal with carbs, cruise dunes and rip up hills, go with a banshee. If you want to re-live the glory days every now and then, go with a new/newer yfz. We share the same style of riding and I did not enjoy duning a banshee. Shooting up Olds was fun as hell though on a banshee, but I still enjoyed my kfx more at olds.

It was the handling and power band on a banshee that I did not enjoy duning. I felt like I had to do too much pre-planning with the throttle and hold back alot with big hits. Where as the kfx was smash the throttle when I needed it and bash whatever was coming up on the ride.

Figured that would be the case. Need a dean Sundahl chassis

I remember riding my dad’s old banshee back when I was a kid, but no idea how I would feel about it now. Maybe the banshee is something to do later on as a garage piece lol.

Let’s go guy. I’m in the market and gonna need some riding buddies

I loved my banshee, wish I didn’t sell it but I don’t ride dunes enough any more to have a bike and a quad. I had long travel an arms and fox shocks and a wider axle which are a must as the stock front suspension sucks and they’re pretty narrow stock.
I’ve owned and rode 400s, 450s and a raptor 700. Didn’t like any of them as much as the banshee for duning, but then again I’m a sucker for a rowdy 2 stroke.

I have had the TRX250R -TRX450 - KFX450 fuel injected - the YFZ450 Carburated Raptor700 FI and now a 2023 YFZ450 FI It is INCREDIBLE ! I got lucky last summer a buddy was selling it - It is stock BUT has the Duncan seat / catch can / IMS nerf bars / Steering stablizer and Fleex Bars - IT IS AMAZING to ride

I rode @ChEFF when he first got his and I was hooked !!!

IMHO - Just fin a new YFZ450 - It wont let you down

Fuel injected Yamaha 450 is the way to go. I had a fully done up 2005 Yamaha 450 and my kid had the newer fuel injected one. In stock former the new Yamaha rode really nice and the power delivery was much nicer with the fuel injection.

I rode a Banshee for many years and they are blast for the raw power when it hits. They just do not handle like the newer 450s.

My riding in the early days was on a Banshee. I really loved the power band and learned to keep it in that power band. My riding style was used to that and I expected that from a quad. I rode a buddies 450 4 stoke for a day and I just didn't care for it. I liked shifting and the work that it took to make it scream.

Thats my input for what it's worth. I still feel a quad is the best way to go thru the dunes. It is the full experience and hard to find in a car or sxs.

When ever I get a chance to hop on a banshee and give it a rip, I do it. Its an itch that will never go away.

I had a Banshee that I spent sick money on to make it ride like a Honda, still did not ride like a Honda but it was as close as I could get.
Went thru 2 05 Hondas and they were fun at the racetrack and in the dunes, not arms getting ripped out of their sockets fun like a Banshee but even with my upgraded suspension on the Banshee that made the whoops on the bottom of Olds feel flat it still would turn like a jet boat with the engine turned off compared to the Honda and Yamaha four strokes.
Hondas were nice had HRC kits and pipes on them along with upgraded shocks. They were smooth and quick and could out turn anything and everything.

Then I got a YFZ450R and that thing was by far the best bike I ever rode, this includes the Ex-Wifes Raptors (660 & 700)

My build list for a Dune runner/jumper would be

YFZ450R
TRX 450
TRX250R
Raptor 700
Banshee
Raptor 660

If I wanted to go real fast up the hill, Banshee would be at the top of the list
