What is essential in your toy box?

3. one of these...

I have one of these in my trailer & have used it for a couple of years now.  its pretty darn nice, given the cost.  I have a cheapie "craftsman" tool box against the front wall that has a bunch of the other strange stuff you dont use very often, but need to have quick access too.  screw drivers, pliers, air chucks, dikes, BFH, razor knife, etc.  I normally pull the spare tire & jack out to hold down the carpet in front of the door, so getting to the tool box is easy.

Tools are kind of like spare parts, they gradually build up to the point where you have just about everything you need, then you change hobbies.  LOL.

Having an enclosed has allowed me to carry more things.  I carry two loading ramps (mounted on wall) in case I get stuck in the moho, spare Metric and American bolts and nuts (separated), assorted power tools, air compressor, lots of oils/cleaners, battery charger, MC tubes, jack stands, jack, extra tie downs, lots of different silicones, container with wire connectors and stuff, and bins full of goggles and headsets.  Love having my sort of garage with me............

Let's start a realistic spare parts list:

  • Alternator (probably the most common failure I see in G)
  • Starter
  • Plugs (set or two)
  • Wires (probably a full set, but at least a few)
  • At least one CV
  • At least one axle (assuming yours are the same side to side... you'd be surprised how many aren't... in that case both)
  • At least one tie rod
  • At least one of every size Heim in the car
  • At least one of any bushing, uniball etc. used in your car
  • At least one front brake line (they tend to be the same side-to-side)
  • Serpentine Belt
  • Blower Belt (if that applies to you)
  • Every Fuel Filter in your system
  • One Injector
  • MAP Sensor
  • TPS(ensor)
  • Air Filter(s)
  • Oil Filter
  • Enough fluids for 1 full fluid change on everything

And spares that are a stretch to keep around, but if you really want to be a prepper you'll have:

  • Water Pump
  • Fuel Pump
  • Complete Clutch setup (have a pilot bearing, alignment tool, whatever slave cylinder your system uses, etc.)
  • Complete set of injectors
  • Crank Position Sensor
  • Cam Position Sensor
  • IAC
  • Complete ECU, tuned (yes, I know ppl that have a complete ready-to-go spare)
  • Rebuild Kit for Brake and Clutch Masters (or complete spares)
  • Complete front spindle assembly
  • One front caliper
  • One rear caliper
  • At least one Rocker Arm
  • Rear Main Seal
  • Front Seal (with tools to pull balancer)

I'm sure I'm missing a ton of stuff, so what can you add?

Really how often do they fail?? I never had one go but not using ls type either.I dont doubt it but its new to me

Alternator?  I've had two fail on me in the last couple years.  The way they sit on LS cars they take a TON of sand off the paddles, generally.  I have seen some good shield setups but haven't done one myself.  Besides mine, I'd say there's one that fails just about every trip in my extended group (I've given my spares away a zillion times).

Great list TJ glad I mentioned it to you. I will start knocking things off the list. For some of us (ME) it is a 10 hr drive to go play in glamis. So I would rather a few hours to swap something out that have to load up and go home. We had 1 almost new alternator take a crap (wearing wore out) last trip. I always here crank pos sensors going out too. Can never be too prepared.

i just started putting together my kit- i run a flat bed race trailer so less space for parts- i use totes

Tool roll with basic tools

Impact bag with milwaukee impact gun and 3 sets of sockets- deep and short

spare whips

Alternator

belt tensioner

fuel pump

fuel pressure regulator

extra rolls of wire- different gauges and colors

2 boxes of assorted wire connectors- butt connectors, ring terminals etc

box of spare fuses

hose clamps

zip ties various lengths

shop towels

grease

enough fluids to change the whole vehicle- oil, trans, brake, power steering, gear oil, coolant

Spare filters- oil and air

spare belts

spare rolls of hose- different sizes

spare AN fittings

spare misalignments and heims

Spare hardware all sizes

nitrogen tank with regulator and shock fill tool

large fire ext for trailer

spare driveshaft

2 spare tires

Fuel is an obvious one

spare lug nuts/studs

First aid kit

tow strap

As many have mentioned this kind of thing takes time to evolve- as trips go on you realize things you need that you don't have.  There is a fine line between bringing what you need and bringing way too much, its impossible to know what will break/fail in the dunes just try to have most of the bases covered.  Try to package things and organize the best way possible so things are easy to access and get to in a pinch.
