Nice. I know that the chop has progressively gotten worse, and suspected it was due to the influx/explosion of side by sides, but had never really thought about WHY it was that way. You summed up the physics of it nicely. Our whole group has switched over to SxS from quads, so I imagine our rides will be slower and more mellow than before. But I am hoping it will be easier to get up and going in the morning though. Still planning on taking one of my DS 650's out there, but only as a Plan B.SxS are not the only ones who make tracks they just make the worst ones for a guy on a Quad.
I rode a quad thru the HELOC boom and it was nothing compared to the SxS chop of today.
Side by Sides have 3 times the HP as a Quad so they move a lot of sand, they also have just about the same width tire. The distance between most side by sides is also just over the width of most quads so you cant comfortably ride in between the ruts and if you try you get slammed from side to side as you try to pick a line. When you have to roll across them, they are to close and deep to be able to lean back and skim over the top.
One of the last quad rides I did was leaving the Flagpole after a Vet Ceremony even with a well set up suspension and a high dollar steering stabilizer I was done. I couldn't even get up to speed to try and get on top of all the chop. It was like rock crawling out of that valley. I knew then the Quad days were done
I had a Rs1 for a season and they are a blast out there, but you can't hang with the big boys on the very fast rides. The Rs1 has stiff swaybars and does not feel tippy at all and slides nice and flat in the sand. Good luck.Nice. Thanks for the info....What kind of sand tires did you run on your RS1? Mine came with a set of STU Razor Blaster Fronts and Sand Blaster Rears, both 28". You think I will be over-paddled with those? Did you used to run the RS1 in 4x or 2x?I had a Rs1 for a season and they are a blast out there, but you can't hang with the big boys on the very fast rides. same boat we all used to ride quads, now they all switched to sxs, I have not been out in a couple years because of that, I will still hit OW with my cousins who like hardpack, did just find out some of my current coworkers who ride bikes and quads like to camp at cement flats but they are young and really like going on holiday weekends to watch the shows at the drags and hills we will see whats in store for me.Nice. those tires should be ok. i had 30" sand strippers(sand flickers! horrible tire). I liked 2wd because i like to drift when i corner. I liked it soo much i removed the front diff and axles which lightened up the front end alot. I still have the front axle stubs if you want to do the same, ill send them to you. Thanks for the info....What kind of sand tires did you run on your RS1?
