Scary AF!
My heart breaks for friends who were impacted by the SoCal wildfires.
We were cancelled by State Farm in 2019 shortly before we moved to TN. During our time there, we had 5 major fires- two came close to nearly burning down our place. The only option was an insurance product offered by the state, and it was 4x more expensive.

Grass ain't greener on the other side of the fence...just a different shade!

Just had a conversation with a bartender while in Dallas Texas for work. She said it’s been a real struggle for her and her family and the grass isn’t always greener. Worst part is she said the family sold her childhood home so no real option to coming back to California.

Even if my wife and I had to leave California I don’t think we sell the house at least not until we were 100% sure we never wanted to move back.

I was in CA for 32 years. Swore I would never leave and that I had found my home. Enter liberal politics, over crowding, traffic, high prices, rude people, etc... It got to a point where we never left the house. If we did, we'd only go out between 10am and 2pm because outside of that, traffic, no parking, fucking people.

Bought my house in Havasu as a second/vacation home during covid. We found we spent more time in Havasu enjoying freedoms and a slower pace. We decided to sell my San Diego house and made a killing. Not one single regret.

4 plus years now and everyday my wife and I say we should have done this sooner and do not miss CA one bit. When we have to go back to visit family or for whatever, we cannot wait to leave and get back home.

True, but some sides of the fence at least let you water the grass. As your boss keeps giving you more and more compensation in order to make it so you can keep an even keel because you are giving more and more to the man and the guy who is on the other side of the fence is actually making less than you is getting further ahead you only hope that when that moment strikes your not trapped.

Can I get a raise?

Depends what part of CA you are in - avoid the coast, and live in rural areas...have a well, some land - if that's your lifestyle the cost of living is pretty similar from state to state from what I've looked at. If you want to live in a housing track - then ya, cheaper outside of CA.

I've lived in a few states now and they all fuck you, it just goes by a different name. Where we were in VA has a higher cost of living than San Diego but wages were similarly high (like any large metropolitan area). Registration on my truck was only $65 a year! I really thought I was doing good but after 6 months, something called Personal Property Tax showed up in the mailbox. They wanted $1200 for the truck for the previous 6 months. As an added bonus, you all get to pay this on your quads, boats, trailers, RVs, snowmobiles, etc. every 6 months. I just paid off my final bill in December; just over $1400 for 2 trailers. One of them 6 months and the other for 3 months. The Man always gets his pound of flesh.
