Tool Talk

I 100% agree with everything in this post.

I probably have (what it would cost to replace today..) 75k in Snap-on stuff. I won't buy another piece from them though. The ICON line up from HF is awesome. If I handed you one of my Snap-on wrenches and the same ICON unit, you wouldn't be able to tell the difference. Not in feel or function.

The US General boxes are solid too. I bought one to match my terribly overpriced Snap-on box....yellow w/ black trim.
Same. I have alot of older snap on stuff; the new stuff is garbage and my rep got to be not so good about honoring the warranty on alot of items. I still use the specialty stuff like thin wall swivel socket, ratcheting tap drivers etc. but for alot of things other brands are MUCH BETTER. I have alot of crescent stuff (snap ring pliers, tin snips, etc, husky for wrenches and torque wrenches, sockets, allens, torx’s, still have old craftsman screw drivers and tool boxes.

I started out many moons ago with Proto most of what I have also Snap on, Mac and Craftsman’s.
I did HF for my end wrench sets for the garage after a long conversation with my wife who said no way but I convinced her I didn’t need the high dollar sets from the tool trucks for occasional use and the warranty is the same I haven’t tried Husky but may have to. Good thread @Dockmaster.

I bought a half dozen BOXO sets for the enclosed, kids etc. Pretty happy with them all in all though a tad overpriced IMO. Bought large US General cabinet and top chest as well as mechanics cart from HF and super happy with them. I have a lot of old craftsman stuff (sears days) and Snap On as well, my least favorite are the craftsman ratchets, junk IMO.

I forgot about Proto. We are a heavy industrial setting at work and Proto is what we buy for our folks to use. Never hear any complaints. I would call it mid-price stuff but good quality. I also have a Husky socket and ratchet set on my boat I've had for about 10 years now. It has served me well with only one ratchet failing but it's in a saltwater environment so hard to blame the tool.

I bought 2 of these kits when Sears was still in El Cajon...one for the motorhome and one for home...love it, has almost everything and comes with a box.

I bought the 1,000.00 tool kit to take with me in my Speed car.. I gotta admit though anything other than minor repairs it's getting towed back to camp. LOL.

It's a very nice tool kit though!

I carry basics in the boat or buggy. Like you if I need anymore than that or those tools ain’t enough to fix I’m just fuked and there’s a tow strap for that. 🙈

I like hearing the HF boxes are good stuff. I have an idea of buying 3 boxes for the mancave, Red, White & blue

Most of my tools are Snap-On...but have to admit the ICON tools at HF are pretty damn good. The Quinn stuff at HF is just re-branded Pittsburg so choose wisely. Husky is pretty good as well.

I'll add this, I have a box full of broken Snap on and Mac tools,
Willing to rehome them for 20%, you redeem them. :D

Snap-on as a company has some brilliant marketing, they package everything in a plastic carrying case with a lid so that when your tool box is "full" you have to upgrade to a bigger one. I don't go onto the tool trucks anymore but when I do there's always some young kid from our lube rack that's asshole deep in debt with the truck already, and he doesn't have enough tools to fill a paper bag with and the tool truck guy is trying to get him approved for some "promotional" tool box extravaganza that ends TONIGHT! It makes me sick to see young techs who may not know any better get taken advantage of.

Like a lot of good products, Snap-on has managed to price itself out of the market for a lot of cost conscious people. I'm seeing a larger number of Snap-on dealers who are running their business out of a Freightliner rig, needless to say It looks like the tool profits are going well for them.
