The Funco Pile up...

Glamis CSI Says: Looks like the lead guy lost a front tire at the bottom of the drop , guy's 2 and 3 got it slowed down in time to really do a lot of damage but guy #4 was heading downhill when he locked up the brakes and went over.

In the big scheme of things that isn't a pile up it's a they run fast and close and everybody was on point and got stopped before it got expensive , just one guy had a little to much air under his tires when he got on the binders :point: pretty much this
I typically lead our group and I pretty much drive up on the wheel as hard as I can go. And yes we do follow close. -Ironically we had just taken a break and were just planning on cruising over to see someone at pad 3.  I just plain ass mis read this rise as a roller and lawn darted it off a 16 to to 20 footer, no brakes no nothing no radio call just a sudden stop at the bottom. We were defiantly  a little tighter then at full speed so #2 called it on radio on his way to kissing my ass which caves  in my  exhaust. His son in #3 got it wooed up without hitting his dad. #4 did not have his radio on our channel cam over to a surprise tossed it sideways to avoid but clipped #3 and flipped  it on it’s lid.

called one of my shop kids and said bring me some parts and you’ve got a free ride the rest of the weekend.  Had it back together by 10 am Saturday and burned another drum of fuel.

Question is : Did I run out of talent or did  the shop need some service work  :cheff:

Only #5 came away unscathed?

At Grants speed, it happens to all of us!  So something broke to stop the ride.  Was it a spindle?  But guessing a hiem

glad all were safe and were driving soon!

Glad everyone is ok!

@Grant@Funco Say hey to Dave G. your brother in law! I worked with him, he just retired! Great guy!

You have to get him out there in one of your cars! Just don't do this. :dbart:

Hey for Grant to get those cars back together in the dunes as quickly as he did is awesome. We crossed paths a few times and he was rolling pretty damn good. It was rough terrain out there. Glad everyone was safe.

Yeah... that must be it.  Funcos suck in the dunes and Grant can't drive.  Oh, wait, actually:

Awesome of you to come on here and give us the truth Grant!  And to admit you just flat-out missed the drop.  The CSI and keyboard warriors here weren't half as bad as IG.  Man, so many people posting "more money than skills" and "n00bs" type comments, or just saying the cars were POS not any better than a SxS.  It's doubtful there is anyone out there with more seat time in G, especially FAST seat time than you Grant.  And I've ridden with you, there's no questions you can drive the tits of a car.  As others have stated, when you run 11/10ths sometimes something happens.  It's not like Michael Schumacher never crashed.

Anyway, it's an amazing age we live in, it seems like every 14-30 year old has advanced degrees in political theory, medicine, philosophy, history AND have been race car drivers and builders for decades.  I just don't understand how our civilization and culture are degrading so quickly with all of these highly educated experts out there...

I have a buddy who likes to be ride right behind me - I'm always worried he's going to slam into me.  I don't know why he and others like to be so close - to me it takes the fun out of driving...I'd rather watch the leader and pick slightly new lines if needed, plus no need to eat each other's sand....but to each their own - glad everyone is OK.

Why do people who like to drive so close to each other enjoy it? I'm curious to know the reasoning. Makes it more like you're racing?

Fact is, moving at those speeds, the radio only helps the #3 and beyond car.  #2 can't react fast enough and the leader can't relay the information fast enough.  Glad everyone is OK.

Happy New Year, nice seeing you last week as well.

It is amazing we aren't living on Mars yet..

Had this happen to me and it was a hard hit! Not fun.

Edit to add. There are no "crush zones" in sand/off road cars.

Our riding buddy would ride his XR600 like that....10ft off our rear ends in the dezert.......finally found out why....he couldn't see for chit, so he followed as close as he could to watch how we bounced....... We were racing D37 at the time and hauled the mail on our CR500s..... was fun but scary at the same time.

The dunes were weird in some spots this past week.

when you have a good fast leader, the ride is so fast that if you stayed back any further then "you" become your own leader and fall behind. also when #2,3&4 follow that close they get a good feeling for what #1 is feeling, if not then they get a substantially slower dune experience

My number 2 guy is generally so close that he 100% has to trust me (we have been duning for years) that he knows im not slowing down, he knows what i can plow through, he knows how i think.  he has to stay the course too  10 feet to the right or left of me could be bad.  if i stuffed it, there is no communications that could work  he is already in the air before i land.

I love that!
