The Dreaded Motion Sickness

I am right there with you. Started happening when I was on a quad. Now with the cage it is 10 times more intense.  What I found was most of the time it was a combo of things

I have to eat before the morning ride or I get sick, I can't eat to much though and I need a snack at some point in the ride.

Heat, I have noticed the last few years If I start to get hot I start getting sick

My eyes are bad so i wear glasses. Normally I wear a  progressive lens so I can see far and still read up close. In the dunes I cannot wear my progressives. I take them with me if I have to work on something but the glasses I wear while duning are strictly for improving my far vision .

The sun is the next thing.  As soon as the sun gets high up in the sky and the shadows disappear  and it starts to white out it is only a matter of time before I start getting dizzy.  About the 3rd time I hit a bump or drop that I didn't see me eyes start dancing around in their sockets and I get dizzy.

Next thing is lack of sleep, If I am tired all the triggers show up easier.

I would start with getting your eyes checked as well as your ears.  Both can effect you balance and that is what is going on your balance gets out of whack.

Sea fishing on a big enough boat and jackass cessna pilots would give me motion sickness that would last for hours. Dramamine didn't help at all. Then somebody told me to eat a jelly donut before doing whatever would give me motion sickness. I gotta say it works.
Would or wouldn't?

One of my buddies gets motion sickness too.  A 12 pack of Bud lights usually solves it for him...

Two words

Blood Work

if you don’t do it regularly, make sure to tell your doctor and get a full panel.

Thats where I’d start. I used to get it, but that was because I’d get SFD (sh__ faced drunk) around the campfire at night and then would need a six pack just to be able to drive without being sick.

I no longer roll that hard so not having the self inflicted issue anymore.

Hope you figure it out and feel better. Sounds like excessive alcohol isn’t your problem.

Only happens to me if I dune quickly at night and am leading. Never happens in the daytime or if I ride in the back at night.

My Doctor  warned me about the dry mouth.  She said cut the patches in half.   Works for me

On a more serious note...although my above comment is accurate..

What has helped some of the peeps I've ridden with is being further back in the train.   My Ex used to get real bad motion sickness.  Not being the first one in line helped a ton.  It gave her something to focus on. I would lead 99% of the time though so that was difficult.  Getting her her to drive was a huge help too. Making her lead. Once she could see "the lines" her eyes were not bouncing all over making her sick.  Her in the SXS following me on my quad turned out to be the ideal scenario.

Unfortunately for her, we would typically arrive late at night.  I would unload the car and immediately go for a run, not even setting up camp.  Blasting through the dunes, top speed, in the dark, was not an ideal way to start her weekend..

Meh, they're Ex's for a reason, right...?  LOL

Hope you find a solution OP

Ok so..

Quad Bad, SxS Bad, Empty Stomach Bad, No Snack Bad, Hot Bad, RX Glasses Bad, Sun Bad, Clear Sky Bad, Bumps and Drops Bad, No Sleep Bad....

We need to trade places, you sitting behind my keyboard sounds much safer space for you. I'll dune and not chuck cookies...win win for everyone?

:lmao:

Lots of great advise in this thread...try some stuff out OP and report back what ends up working for you.

I got sick once, but that was because the leader of the ride was going round and round like a cracked out Squirrel after his own nut. :tll:

I get dizzy and want to chuck cookies, I don't though.  I am a man and can keep chit suppressed in my system like your supposed to.  Now if you would excuse me I am late for my mani pedi and calf message.

Thanks for all the responses, I let you know how things go after Vets weekend.

where can you buy the patches? My wife is super interested as she can barely ride in my car for 5 minutes before getting sick.

i have had a lot of concussions and i get some issues as well. for me its the helmet. i can not use a full face helmet i need the wind in my face or i start to get sick. also the fit and weight of the helmet. last season i got a really nice fly helmet, i think it was like $650 but found it online for less. its the lightest one i have used, my head is little too big for a medium and a tad too small for a large but i go with the large.  that has helped alot. switching from a fox V3, i didnt like the fit of the fox. same with googles the fit is very important.

after my last concussion i though i was not going to be able to ride anymore but switching the helmet has helped alot. im also about 3 or 4 back in our rides not sure if that helps since i focus more on the car in front than trying to read the dunes to find a line.

some of my friends wifes have some issues with sickness and they suck on hard ginger candy, they say that helps them.

Unfortunately the patches are only available by prescription.   Any doctor I have asked has prescribed them for me.

Id start with the eyes since you stated there was degradation there and its the easiest thing to correct. Lots of good advice here, I have a friend who just gave up duning for the same reason. He was not as avid a duner as you though. Good Luck!

There are pills called Kwells on ebay, out of Austrailia... they are made by bayer...but only sold in outside the states... I swear by them...they are the same stuff as the patches, just in a  pill form. They used to sell them here as scopalamine until some dipshits started using it as a date rape drug in large quantities.... My wife swears by them.

GO to the Dr and get checked out...lots of things can cause loss of equalibrium.
She use them on you much?

Vertigo can definitely cause it. As we age, we get debris and chit in our ears that messes up the little hairs in your inner ear to tell you if you're moving or not.

Yes, she knocks me out, then goes and shacks up with her boyfriends while I'm out.....

No offense, but your doc is a dumb dumb. The patches are designed to release small amounts of the drug transdermally through the pores of the patch over the 3 day period. You cut the patch- you alter the delivery system- and risk getting all of the drug at once or none at all.

Don't cut the patch, amigo
