A little back story:
I'm in grocery sales, and I had a customer that we got along great (well I don't have any I don't get along with lol).
He reached out almost a yr ago and we had lunch. He said I'm working on my 5 yr plan, and I am thinking about putting up my 3 stores up for sale.
He is a now a retired attorney for an very large oil company. When his father passed it was passed to him and his sisters, so he lived in another state, had a home here in okla, and traveled back and forth, and the sisters lived elsewhere and basically got one rent check per kid as their inheritance.
So for doing nothing and living in other states they did pretty damn good I'd say.
Anyways, he was looking to find the valuation of his stores. And I told him be ready you will have buyers lined up and you won't see 5 years so be ready to sell or don't even bother testing the waters. These stores were very nice, lots of updates, all new gondolas, refrigeration, hvac etc. His plan over the years was to not show a profit or very little every year, so his siblings won't get anything since they didn't help with the business.
So we officially put them up for sale, and bam sharks are swarming. These are all mom and pop operations, multi store operators, all in rural okla.
He sold the stores quick, and I texted him a couple times just to check on him and the wife, with no real replies, as he kinda vanished and didn't want to go back in them under someone elses rule I'd guess.

So he calls me out of the blue last week and says hey man send me your address so I can send you a Christmas card, I want to send you something for all your help during covid, the sale and all you did for me. I told him it was my job, I don't need anything and he says I insist.
So I send him my address, expecting a card or a box of omaha steaks, something along those lines.
The card comes and I open it up. He said you always took care of us and treated us like family/friends, never a customer, so I want you to have this.
I flipped the check over and its a check for 5k. I damn near passed out. i absolutely was not expecting anything like this. never in a million years.
I just did my job, that's it. I do the same thing for all my customers. Going above and beyond is my minimum expectation of myself.
I'm still in shock actually.
