In some markets Yelp is necessary. Out here in San Diego it doesn't seem to be the case, everyone uses Google. As soon as I claimed my Yelp page I had a barrage of phone calls for months.. years... every time that I would get pissed off and tell them to leave me alone they would hide my reviews and always put my three star review at the top.
Angie's list will send out the same lead to 10 people and then charge all 10 people for it. It's a race by the vendors to see who can call the customer first. They tell you that you can call in for a refund but that's just not the case.
Good luck man! I spent years and years with the whole SEO, website, social media, etc etc thing. It's a marathon not a race, keep that in mind. Good SEO takes a long time to work naturally. In the meantime, spend your advertising money with Google my business page and Google local. Local Facebook groups in your area and the next door app are great avenues as well
P S -- in the spirit of being fair, even though Yelp is the devil, there are people that use it with great success but they do spend a chit ton of money doing it
