Snow thread

Polaris has the new boost 850 motor with turbo. Adjusts the boost depending on elevation. You can hear the wastegate/BOV in parts of this vid. Awesome. $20k base for a mountain sled, then start adding your upgrades. Just like side by sides.  :headbang:  Check out how close the turbo dumps into the exhaust can.

Been shopping for several weeks to upgrade my sled. Was looking all over back east and was going to cost a grand just to ship one. Much less get payment to someone and buy a used one. Found one in San Diego of all places. He is from Iowa. Awesome seller and I am going to pick it up in a couple of weeks. 2018 Polaris Switchback Assault with 800 HO motor and 144" Challenger 2" track.  Dropping 75lbs from my current 2007 M1000 and jumping from 162 to 168 HP. Can't wait! Even has Mountain spindles to narrow the front more like a mountain sled. More like the SKS.

I was in between, should I get an assault or sks. This sled might just be in the middle and perfection.

Sled I am buying will do 108 mph stock with a 1.3 track. It is geared down now for the 2" track and will do about 92 mph. (Still stupid fast)  My M1000 with 162 track will maybe do 75mph. That kind of speed in the trees feels like 100. I have ridden or driven pretty much everything offroad on dirt or water and snowmobiling comes in a close second to duning.

So here is a good snow story. Don't know if we have any original pics so this one is just from online somewhere. Back in the late 70s and early 80s my dad would buy Yamaha 340 snowmobiles new in the crate and then sell them to a few people around Mormon Lake. He used to have me pull them out of the crate and assemble them. So this is in Phoenix at 39th Ave and Missouri area. I take a brand new sled and drive down the street with the skis sparking and over to Sevilla grade school. Proceed to start making passes up and down the grass field of the school. IIRC these things would do maybe 55mph but that was still fast. I will never forget all the kids playing basketball just stopped and stared at this idiot running back and forth on the grass. Get home and rear rubber flap had rolled up into the track and worn a big groove in it. Don't think my dad ever said anything but of course he knew what I was up to. Man there was a lot of crazy stuff we did on snowmobiles and motorcycles.  Dropped one through the ice one time and was standing in 2' of ice cold water.   Haha 1980 I was 17.

My M1000 I have had for about 7-8 years now. Thing is a beast. 520 lbs dry and 608 with fluids. With fuel, oil, and me on it with gear just a shade over 800 lbs. About 9 years ago just before I had turned 50 I had two mishaps within a couple of months. First at the dunes and first trip out I am on my KTM 477 two wheeler. Following 8 quads. Sand was soft at the beginning of the season and cresting over the top to come down Olds my front tire dipped into soft sand and spit me over the bars. Bike then landed on my leg hard. Did not break but was a hard hit. Someone in camp had a percoset and I was back out riding in the afternoon. Not long after that I was riding up north on the sled and running along some ranches back in Long Park area outside Mormon Lake. Came over a rise and oh crap dropped into a ditch and dead stop into a culvert. Each ranch had a long driveway and culvert for that wash. Was going way to fast. Hit so hard I landed way out in front of the sled sitting on my ass looking around. Bent the steering stem and hood hinge pins.

Was up in Brianhead / Duck Creek, Ut. last week. I had no idea how big sledding and ice fishing are.. Going on a group ride 1/31. This may get expensive...

Not as bad as duning but yes same type of addiction. You can spend $1k on gear to stay warm.

New years weekend this year we had 28 sleds on one ride. Got up very close to Hutch mountain at about 8100 feet and several trees across the trail. Someone has a saw and we cut small fallen trees to clear the way. These were to big. So this spot is very narrow and steep to go up and turn around. I drove our two sleds right up the mountain and turned around be some are trail sleds only. If you look at the sled in the background he was buried deep. 6-7 guys rolled that thing out of the hole like a barrel to get it out. These things still weigh 450-500 lbs so like a big boat anchor. What does a 450 quad weigh? I think 350 for a Honda.  Took at least an hour to turn everyone around. We normally don't ride with that many people but it was still fun. I guess just like duning, get enough people in a group and more crap and carnage is bound to happen.  My wifey on her sled. It is a trail sled but I installed a 2" paddled mountain track. She still has 140 hp and it rips.

When it gets deeper than this the little blue tractor gets put away for my old gal. Not uncommon to have 15-20’ snow piles..

in the other picture I get to look at a ski resort while I freeze working in it..

ok so not cool but still snow related..

Ive been a snowmobiler for all my adult life… just having a hard time enjoying it as I get older and would rather be warm..
