S4 breather

I got my s4 back from rebuild/ upgrades and was unpleasantly surprised to find out that the elbow for the breather on the front cover is now interfering with my sway bar. Is there any issue with using a brass breather vent plug with a 40 micron screen in lieu of the elbow with the coiled hose?

it will blow oil out

Just run what ever piece out of the tranny you need and then run rubber hose up above the trans to vent and then down to the ground.

No screens. No filters are needed.

Changed trans from something to a S4 or did you add sway bar?
I would not be happy with my fabricator.

All you can do is add another vent line somewhere else and plug that hole.

The car was built new with a s4. This is the result of upgrading to the gen 3 shift mechanism. The vent location was changed from my gen 1 mechanism cover and it seems like the gen 3 cover is a little thicker.

Can you plug that one and add a breather elsewhere?

Not sure where or how you drive, we go to Dumont and St Anthonys, the hills are steep, I set mine up with multiple breathers,
one is on the front of the trans using a 4an line, but going down hill that is going to get clogged with oil and plug then push out the oil,
I also have one on the side of the trans, replaced the fill bolt with a AN fittings and run one from there also,

The new cases also have one on top of the Diff housing

Just plug it and vent it over the ring gear. Don't do the loop that's useless and just plugs. Run the hose up as high as you can then back down to the bottom of the car

That vent location never changed from Gen 2 to Gen 3. It might have been different on the super early Gen 1 housings that said "Mendeola/PBS" on them, it's been awhile since I've seen one. But I remember them being in the same location. I am wondering if the car builder moved the vent line on the original trans to accommodate the sway bar?

Was your vent in a different location on the previous trans to avoid that sway bar?

The easiest solution would be using holes/plugs on the top of the mid section of the trans that you can use for a vent line, assuming you do not have a pump/circulation system. Make sure to use one that is not located directly above a gear if possible, other wise the gear can push oil into the vent line and pump oil out of the trans. These threaded holes are 3/8NPT on early housings, or 3/4"x16tpi on the newer housings, these have a flanged style plug.

The other option would be drilling a hole in top of the very front housing and tapping for a new 1/8NPT vent fitting. Give me a ring and I can walk you though this so you don't hurt anything inside the trans.

This is a really early s4. The old front cover does say mendeola/pbs and the front cover vent location is placed up higher. I upgraded the gear carrier housing so it has the new style orb plugs rather than the npt plugs like it had before. The car was built by Tatum in 2002.
