Rear tire advise

I have 33-15 #2 cut Blaster tires, 2D, and stock Honda 3.5 in a 2 seat Sand Limo Squirt. At St Anthony I bog down when going up dunes (follow the leader spirited cruising not racing straight up hills). A guy there with similar horsepower told me I had too tall of tires with too much traction.
I drive in mostly 3rd, downshifting to 2nd and rarely get into 4th.

For those that have a low 200ish horsepower engine what is your opinion on switching to 14.50-15 Dunesport , 1300-15 Padla Trak, or 33-15 Blaster #1 cut?
Are turning breaks required for the Dunesports?
What width of wheel do you recommend for your tire suggestion?
* for those that have never been to St Anthony, the elevation seems to rob some horsepower.

What gearing do you have?

I have the same drivetrain setup in likely a heavier car. I've been running Extreme Holeshot 13.50's on a 10" wheel. This setup works really well. The tire carcass measures 32". I've got some new Blackbird 32" Pros I'll be trying this year. I really want the flatter profile tire to get some of the sliding ability. I had Dune Sports on my old car and they were a ton of fun. The problem with them is they realistically measured approx. 28.5" at the carcass.

If you're able to dune in 3rd & 4th gear I'd say your gearing may be ok, just a little too much bite with the #2 paddle. There's always the option of trimming the #2 paddle down a bit (closer to a #1) and see how that does.

has some really nice lightweight tires for 200-300hp cars. I run the 33" on my Pro R with 280hp and it does great! These tires are not like the other molded heavy tires out there, they are light weight, not as light as a shaved tire but damn close.

I loved my dune sport tires! Close to same setup but I did have 5:13 R&P and a 1.36 4th gear. I dunned all day in 4th.
 
Bog as in can't always use 3rd? Do you spend any time on flats where 4th is useful?
 
STU suggests the 33-15 even in a #1 cut for 300+ horsepower. Not sure what the resale is like but if there isn't much, it may be worth trimming to a #1 to see how it works. SR32 in a #2 or alternating #1-2 looks to be in their recommended window for that horsepower range.

Bog as in can’t always use 3rd, stall out in 3rd getting over the top of some bowls. There isn’t much flat areas at St Anthony that you would want to go 4th gear fast do to the chop or ruts.

Thanks for the info. What do you think about the SR31’s if I can find them? A little smaller diameter.
 
As said above, the Blaster 33 is probably too much bite for the setup you have. Gearing makes a big difference, but I tried a few setups on my last car and the 13.00-Plus on a 10" wheel was by far the best overall for my 3.5/built 091 car. Car was 1600lbs without me in it.

I had tried the Dunesport on a 12" wheel, 16.50 on a 12" wheel, the 13.00 plus on a 12" wheel, and eventually stuck with the 13.00 plus on the 10" wheel.

The only thing I'd be concerned with is ground clearance as you start to get smaller in diameter. It will obviously help with regard to rotational mass (a positive thing). Give STU a call, they're great to talk with. Spent a lot of time chatting with them regarding our SxS tire selection.

What happens in 2nd? Do you enter the bowl beyond the rev limiter of 2nd and it loses power, or are you somewhere in the middle of the powerband in 3rd and it loses power? If it has plenty of power and RPM available in 2nd, it's a Honda and your solution is simple: downshift. :ROFLMAO:

If you just can't get it to spin at all, or you're too high in 2nd, but won't hold 3rd, then yeah, you're too aggressive or too steeply geared. Sometimes you can just add more air to get more spin, but dropping down a size might be necessary if you have the ground clearance.

I always see/hear the "I wanna dune in 3rd" ratios and, yeah, cool, you can dune 3rd and never downshift. but when you actually go to floor it up a hill like Olds or hit the drags, you shift 3 times right into 4th and rev the piss out of it. When we hit a high-speed section, we all have to stop and wait for your oil to cool off because it's been at 5,000rpm to maintain 60 the whole time.

It's a 4-speed transmission. Use 'em. 🤣

1st 3.11
2nd 2.07
3rd 1.60
4th 1.30
 
I have a set of blaster 33 #1 and a set of paddla trak 13.00 both are mounted on wheels. Let me know when you will be in St Anothony next year and you can try them and see if one works for you.

Oh man, must be bad time of year.
We were there in end of May.
Completely smooth sand.
We hit 97mph in the dunes.
4th gear almost flat out, up and down the bowls

But..... I digress. :)
 
Thanks for all the input and advise. Will report back when I try some different tires.
 
I had a squirt, honda 3.5 w/2d. I ran extreme eliminator 14.50x15, comp cut. Worked perfectly. Very similar To a blaster 33. I don't remember the trans gearing, but that car ran like a champ. I used to upshift around 6800. Let er scream
