Well I just got back from a school board meeting where our town got together to stand up for my son's old football coach who was unjustly removed from his position. He got railroaded plain and simple.
He came to us in my sons sophmore year, and was instrumental in getting him to play college ball on a full scholarship where he spent 5 years as the center of his D2 team.
He was a guy who was a father to 100's and probably 1000's of kids, all while raising 3 of his own. He dedicated god knows how many hours to "building the boat" as he would say. In Okla, we never had a team that could compete with the rivals in the east of okla, there's 3 big power house teams and this year he beat 2 teams, first time ever I believe in school history.
He was a mentor to kids, a dad to those who had none, a second dad (like for my son) who felt more comfortable talking to him vs me and i"m ok with that, at least he was there for him in his time of need.
He helped us thru the total hell of recruiting, all the lies, broken promises from college coaches, it was not a good time, hell I needed a psychiatrist worse than my son did by the time it was over. It was lie after lie, promise after promise that was broken, and to see my son go thru this was unbearable. It literally tore the family apart. But luckily coach had played at a d1 level and played for a couple teams in the nfl so to him it was old hat, to me i lost hair, gained weight, damn near ended it all, it was that bad.
His record was 43-43 (now mind you he wasn't allowed to bring in coaches to win, he was stuck with what he had for years)
15-1 on the school rival games, the only loss they ever had was the year after my son graduated thank god lol.
4x academic state champs
2x district coach of the year.
1x COAC coach of the year
sent over 90 kids to college on scholarships worth over 22 millions dollars
but the deal was he was there for the kids thru thick and thin, dealt with all the parents BS and was awarded coach of the year again and removed from his position 3 days later. Here's why:
1). YOU WORK TOO MUCH
2). You didn't utilize your assistant coaches enough
3). You were late getting grades in the system.........he taught PE
4). He didn't spend enough time at the JR high developing the kids, although he started what was called the JR JAGS that starts the kids in peewee ball and takes them into highschool.
And the Athletic Director said we are going a different direction.
So tonite at the school board meeting, there was probably 2-300 kids and parents that showed up in support of him, but of course the school board restricted parents from speaking to 6 people getting 5 minutes each.
One parent spoke and said from the time it was announced he was removed, my son has already lost scholarships, college coaches are showing up to see him and he's not there and noone's in charge so they move on to another school.
He has had 24 job offers in 5 days, and I sure hope he doesn't come back, because he wasn't wanted enough by our school system so I hope he goes somewhere else, makes better money, with someone who appreciates him, and makes them a success.
I learned so much from him as a parent, and even 5 years after my son's left that school, if he sees me at a game or something he comes up shakes my hand and gives me a hug. Just a great dude.
No loyalty to these guys who devote their whole damn life to this game, give up their families for months, and miss all their kids events.
There was 3 news stations there at the meeting, and there was a few peoples jobs called for in this mess. Guess we will see what happens!!
