Well I just got back from a school board meeting where our town got together to stand up for my son's old football coach who was unjustly removed from his position. He got railroaded plain and simple.

He came to us in my sons sophmore year, and was instrumental in getting him to play college ball on a full scholarship where he spent 5 years as the center of his D2 team.

He was a guy who was a father to 100's and probably 1000's of kids, all while raising 3 of his own. He dedicated god knows how many hours to "building the boat" as he would say. In Okla,  we never had a team that could compete with the rivals in the east of okla, there's 3 big power house teams and this year he beat 2 teams, first time ever I believe in school history.

He was a mentor to kids, a dad to those who had none, a second dad (like for my son) who felt more comfortable talking to him vs me and i"m ok with that, at least he was there for him in his time of need.

He helped us thru the total hell of recruiting, all the lies, broken promises from college coaches, it was not a good time, hell I needed a psychiatrist worse than my son did by the time it was over. It was lie after lie, promise after promise that was broken, and to see my son go thru this was unbearable. It literally tore the family apart. But luckily coach had played at a d1 level and played for a couple teams in the nfl so to him it was old hat, to me i lost hair, gained weight, damn near ended it all, it was that bad.

His record was 43-43 (now mind you he wasn't allowed to bring in coaches to win, he was stuck with what he had for years)

15-1 on the school rival games, the only loss they ever had was the year after my son graduated thank god lol.

4x academic state champs

2x district coach of the year.

1x COAC coach of the year

sent over 90 kids to college on scholarships worth over 22 millions dollars

but the deal was he was there for the kids thru thick and thin, dealt with all the parents BS and was awarded coach of the year again and removed from his position 3 days later. Here's why:

1). YOU WORK TOO MUCH

2). You didn't utilize your assistant coaches enough

3). You were late getting grades in the system.........he taught PE

4). He didn't spend enough time at the JR high developing the kids, although he started what was called the JR JAGS that starts the kids in peewee ball and takes them into highschool.

And the Athletic Director said we are going a different direction.

So tonite at the school board meeting, there was probably 2-300 kids and parents that showed up in support of him, but of course the school board restricted parents from speaking to 6 people getting 5 minutes each.

One parent spoke and said from the time it was announced he was removed, my son has already lost scholarships, college coaches are showing up to see him and he's not there and noone's in charge so they move on to another school.

He has had 24 job offers in 5 days, and I sure hope he doesn't come back, because he wasn't wanted enough by our school system so I hope he goes somewhere else, makes better money, with someone who appreciates him, and makes them a success.

I learned so much from him as a parent, and even 5 years after my son's left that school, if he sees me at a game or something he comes up shakes my hand and gives me a hug. Just a great dude.

No loyalty to these guys who devote their whole damn life to this game, give up their families for months, and miss all their kids events.

There was 3 news stations there at the meeting, and there was a few peoples jobs called for in this mess. Guess we will see what happens!!

That SUCKS - I really hope he lands a better position that rewards and appreciates him

:poule:

I still remember my coaches who were so instrumental to my success in life. Peace

There is more to the story.  Just remember Liberalism is a mental disease.........they will destroy everything they can.
Yep.  He probably misgendered someone or didn't do enough to get more trans-down syndrome-illegal aliens on the team.

Sounds like your Community lost a great Coach / Mentor / Leader.

Prayers and support for his next adventure, sometimes reaching the next level is only done elsewhere. Glad your son and family had him when you did.

On a side note, we watched "Greater" last night, the Brandon Burlsworth story. I love sports movies like that.

He sounds like a great Mentor!  Thanks for sharing the story.

Coaching is a thankless job that not many understand, Especially with HS recruiting and all of the new rules with the transfer portal.   Sounds like your family was lucky to have this coach in your life and its awesome that you can see how much he helped your son.  You taking the time to post this shows how much you appreciated all of his help.  I have seen plenty of Great coaches lose their jobs, and I have seen even more shitty coaches keep their jobs, none of it makes sense, its always politics.

Don't worry that Coach will end up right where God wants him to be.
he's a family friend, he recorded the whole conversation. everything he said was in the recording.

that is a GREAT movie, it reminds me so much of my son its not funny and I don't know why. I've watched it a few times and freaking have a hard time watching it every time.

i couldn't do the job.  That guy probably works 14 hours a day every day. He takes kids to camps in other states on his dime, in his ride, just so they can be seen at camps.

he took a kid who was probably 6-6 but probably 100lbs lol, who hadn't played football since peewee, he was a basketball player. convinced his mom to  let him play and in 4 years he got a full ride scholarship to a d1 school as a receiver. but he does that with all the kids that will listen.

There was really 2 people in my sons highschool career that mentored him thru the rat race, and I learned so much more from them. His OL private coach and I still keep in contact and I still go to some of his weekend sessions, just to listen to him speak to the kids. at 56 years old I learn alot from a younger guy who is wiser than his years.

My regret in life is not playing football, I was too busy partying lol. It really is a culture that's great for kids when in the right hands.

The old track coach that was let go, showed up last night and addressed the board. He told his story.

He was told the same exact thing Coach Zo was told, we are going a different direction and your not part of it.

The track coach's team had broke 21 school records on his watch, and he sent multiple kids to college on scholarships. But he told the AD he couldn't be trusted and was gone in 3 days.

Except when he questioned his firing reason the AD told him "I don't need a reason to get rid of you".

I sure hope this AD gets canned, looks like he's the cancer in the program, and these kids just want to win, and go to college. time will tell, but I doubt the football coach stays even if they reinstate him, why stay where your not wanted to only look over your shoulder every day for someone stabbing you in the back.

See the problem is Athletics becomes bigger than the loser Admins at the school. They feel like they are losing control and they lash out and take out the people that are making things better. It's the same ole progressive playbook. It has been going on in schools since I was in public school. You CANNOT threaten the power base.... Funny Trump found out the same thing.

Sad, but when people sit back and allow these people to stay in power...we ALL lose.

Wonder which relative or friend of the athletic director and/or school board is getting the position?  Being in NE Oklahoma I know what you're describing.  My son's baseball coach is worried this same thing will happen to him as well.  All because he's a God fearing man and the communists have infiltrated the administration...even here.  Interested to see how your situation pans out.

The problem with all of the AD's is that they have no one overseeing them and can ruin or build a school up in 1-2 years.  This stuff usually manifest itself, but can be very painful for an athlete if he has AD and coaching changes often through HS.  Really cool that you are still involved and care about the future of the program.

Atheletic Democrats?

This is a heart breaking story as our kids need mentors like this…I still remember all of my coaches and positive effects they left.
We’re somewhat dealing with this BS coaching crap with our Freshman sons HS soccer team…our son has played club soccer since 6-7 and plays at a higher level..now on HS team and hoping for the same and realizing it’s not the case. It’s apparent and very similar to AYSO “every kid plays” and winning isn’t a priority which is pissing my son…it’s already over it. He also made the Lacrosse team and their program seems more targeted to our son mindset. Fingers crossed and hope the best for your sons coach.
