CRF450R I'm looking at has never been registered, its a 2017 and has clear title / pink (from original owner, not guy selling it today).

Red flags to watch for or ways I can find out not stolen, etc.

I know some folks will do this cause they only hit the track, etc.  I wonder what I will have to pay as well to the DMV, cause will will actually get it OHV Stickered.

Thanks for any advice or experience you can share.

While you could possible see stolen, how likely that you could get the title or pink as well?

Is it an actual title? If it’s just the pink slip and you need to get a title, it most likely would have to be in that guys name that’s on the pink slip or you would have to research and find him and have him sign a form from the DMV. Had to do this with an old street sweeper as they were never registered and I bought one that was original from West Virginia, which turned into a big pain. What state? If it’s a regular title and  If it’s never been registered, then you just say it’s been sitting in the garage the whole time and now you’re ready to ride it. To bypass any fees. I would think.

FYI Arizona, you do not need to notarize titles for transfer of sale anymore.

Its a Pink, the bike is in CA.

My Banshee was purchased new,  in Nevada they did not do titles until about 6 years ago, I dont have a title on it. depending on where it was purchased they only did a manufacture cert of origin.

might ask the dmv is they are going to want back fees... you could say it was a closed course bike for all those years....

What's a pink?

I only know of a Certificate of Title (in California) or a Certificate of Origin from manufacturer.

No back fees as long as it's never been actually registered, but will need a bill of sale from the name on Certificate. If it's a Cali Certificate of title it may show year first registered so watch for that. You can also look for sticker residuals on the bike just as a precaution.

Edited to add: no back fees because it's NEVER been off private property

Vehicle Titles – Arizona

Arizona is going paperless with motor vehicle titles and eliminating the need for a Notarization. This actually has been in beta testing since mid 2021 and initially began as 'Sold Notices' on the ADOT website. It now has expanded to the eTitle process effective September of 2022.  This does not effect real estate transactions  **think Mobile Homes.

If the Seller is requesting a notarization, it can still be done if they have the previous paper Title version. But the DMV will also accept those without a notarization.

For an overview of the process go to; https://azdot.gov/motor-vehicles/vehicle-services/vehicle-title-and-registration

You can use the information in this article to direct your calls and inquiries to the websites listed below.

This is effective on 09/24/2022

If it's NEVER been registered, than it should NOT have a title.
I agree it would have had to be registered.  It might be MSO which looks like a pink.  If it is an MSO beware, I just got screwed on a KX100 that had an MSO and California won't register it because it has a small stamp on it saying "This vehicle was manufactured for off-highway us only in sanctioned competition events upon a closed course"

if it's CA and you have the title, no sweat... if it's out of state, some states issue titles but may have a lean against the title. Call and check! I did that with a boat I was looking at a couple years back and am glad I did because the bank was lookin for it according to Idaho fish and game

My kid went through a similar situation when he bought his CRF450R. The seller was a test track rider for Kawasaki. There was title but it had never been registered with the CA DMV. I had my kid call the DMV to make sure the vin was clear ( It was ) and we went ahead with the purchase. If I remember correctly, he had to pay sales tax on his purchase and the fees involved with registering it with the DMV.

Thats an MSO, not a title. If you in fact have a title, that means it's been registered in what ever state the title is from.

The way it works is the manufacturer issues an MSO for the vehicle, the "dealer" will take that MSO and do the registration process with the customer at the time of purchase, sales tax will be paid, and the vehicle will be issued a "Title"

If buying direct from a manufacturer, which is what a lot of MX guys do, then the individual is given an MSO, and pays no sales tax on the vehicle. When it comes time for someone to "register" that vehicle, they will take the MSO to the DMV, pay sales tax, on the original amount of the vehicle, and they will receive a title.

If you have a title, it's been registered, if you have an MSO, it's never been registered.

I bought a Rhino from a local PHX guy that bought it in Missouri with only MSO.  He never registered it.  When I went to register it here they wanted sales tax, but the DMV clerk waived it because of it's age.

Original owner registered it, hence the Pink.  Second owner has had it since 2017 and never registered it?  There will be back registration due.  Go to Sonora Smog CHeck in Fontana.  They are a DMV servce as well and have helped me register serveral out of state and new vehicles and trailers with just an MSO.  It's way cheaper than you would think and no lines like DMV.  AAA won't be able to help.
