I have one you can borrow. Haven't used it in years. Funny though, specifically says NOT FOR AGRICULTURAL use on it. Most people I know burn straight diesel in Glamis. I ised to burn used engine oil, old diesel, E85 or gasoline. Don't burn trans or diff fluid. Smells Iike a propane leak. Turkey fryer oil smells great.

In a pinch, strands of incandescent lights hung in the tree can prevent damage.

You should check the weather and wind estimates to help you decide if smudge pots are a viable option.  If the wind will be 15+mph then those smudge pots wont be much help.  They work great in ow to no wind frost occasions. Not so good or at all if its windy.  Also with 30+ trees and depending on tree spacing, you may need 8 or more of them to do any good.

thanks for the offer.  just ran out of time but did buy one in Sand Diego from a memeber and another member 10 miles away from him allowed me to borrow his too

now its time how to learn.  my neighbor tells me 3 parts oil to 1 part diesel.  says it runs for like 7-8 hours

any do's or dont's?  i don't need an explosion here  lol

Make sure there is no water, zero in the pot, the oil you pour in or any way water can get in.  Water will boil in the base and cause the liquid to boil out and all over the ground.

Pour the oil into the base. Top off with gasoline.  Open the vents on the cap. With the cap open. Use a wood stick with some gas on the tip. Light the stick and use that lit wood stick to ignight the fuel oil vapor.

Once lit. Closet the vent cap. Let the smudgie come alive and get hot. Start choking down the vent to slow down the oxygen flow. This will help get you the 5+hours of burn time.  You want a nice red candle from the stack and not a yellow smoky flame.

We run straight diesel in ours at the dunes, if the tank is full and you choke it down a little, it should burn for up to 8 hours. We light it with a map gas torch, hold the flame in fill port until it gets burning. You don't want to use a torch if you have any gas in the mix. We found that running waste oil really creates a lot of soot in the smudge pot, if we run waste oil, we run 4 gallons of diesel to one gallon of oil. Don't have to clean them as often this way.

No water like stated above, if you are unsure about waste oil having water in it, don't use it. They can boil over and cause a flash fire.

Not sure about the smuge pot, but I can tell you Mobile one will catch fire on a brand new set of ceramic coated headers when you are breaking in the cam on your new stroker motor in your 71 Camaro...........  and those crappy little halon fire extinguishers puts it out pretty quick.
