short version:

someone ran into my son's Camry & the insurance company is going to total it.  Its pretty banged up & I would guess he is going to want to replace it.

He is a broke ass MF'r so he needs a cheap ass car that is going to get him around reliably. (Yep............. I know I just said 2 things that contradict each other.  LOL).

Im in San Diego, & would like to stay local, if possible.

if anyone has something that they are fixin to get rid of, please shoot me a PM.

thanks

Bob

Wait until you see what the insurance is going to offer you, and see what that same year Camry is going for on used car sites, Craigslist etc. You might be surprised what you could get for it. Used car values are up 48% from 2 years ago. You might be able to get a better car.

A friends wife’s 2014 Explorer got water damage in the electronics earlier this year. (Sunroof leaked into the dash) The dealer could not figure it out and the insurance decided to total it. They originally were going to pay out $20K and then within a month they came back and paid out $22K as the value had increased. He went back and looked, they bought it as a dealer lease return from Ford in 2016 and paid $26k & change. 6 years later it only deprecated $4k in this current used car market value.

How is Broke Ass MF'R contradictory?

:lmao:

:bag:

So this might sound like a far fetch but I know some of my local wrecking yards will sell cars with only minor damage that can be repaired easily. Could be a way to get a car on the cheap.

I just went thru this with my son, no easy affordable option out there.

If you get  "new" one....get a Camry w/a 4cylinder.  My daughters has 270K on it.  I drove it to Vegas 2 wks ago, 550 miles away and had no doubts about the trip.

Or, a Nissan, Honda, Mitsubishi...definitly not a VW or Audi

I ended up buying my son a 2012 Corolla Se with 90K for $12,000, clean body, has been in SoCal its entire life.  This same car two years ago would have been $8k.  Told him it is the last car I am buying and if he wants something else I will transfer title and he can trade in.  Great thing he just graduated college and has no car payment.  I certainly was looking for either a Toyota or Honda.

Good luck on your search out there

$3500 & they keep the car,

$3100 & they total it (Salvaged title) & we keep the car.

if they salvage the title and we keep the car, my insurance company will no longer cover the car.

I thought about looking for a car with a blown up motor/trans & transfer it into there, but that sure seems like a hell of a lot of work for a 27 year old car that will have WAY more miles on it than seems reasonable for that level of effort.

And the fact that neither of the drivers side doors work the car seems to drive fine & is not pulling or wearing the tires funny.

@lincster, you have something you are wiling to part with for less than a new FunCo?  (LOL)

And thanks folks!!!!  peanut gallery aside, I appreciate the input.

@Coobie always seems like he has a project car he just finished up that he is selling.

I have a 2002 tahoe im going to sell. Not really a gas sipper averages 15-17mpg, but is the most reliable vehicle ever; for the past 305k miles.

2k$

How many miles on it?

Which motor?

The 4cyl Camry is about to put GM outa business.  They are a 300K car.

You value a car not by its age, but how many miles are left in it.

If you can get the driver's door to open, I'd say drive it.

If you have a lift, that is 2-3 hours to get the motor out.

There are more insurance companies out there....

Son crashed our 2005 Honda Pilot, hit the center divider at 70 mph on the 210 fwy. :headslap:

Insurance is talking about marking it a Total Loss. Damage is not appearance wise bad....but Airbags, Front Axle / Brake systems all got yanked out on driver side. More mechanical trouble then cosmetic.  Broke the tire/wheel right off the hub.

So lucky he didn't get hurt, was stuck in the Carpool lane for about 20 mins at 11pm at night...before CHP came and shut down the fwy.

Oh boy, can't wait to see wait AAA decides....was sooo ready to go buy a new car! :sarcasm:

Aside from the airbag part, that really is an easy fix with u-pull-it junkyard parts.  Subframe, spindle/hub assy, lower control arm, and new wheel.  You could be outta there a few hundo max.  Might even be able to score an airbag.

And that route my Insurance would mark it "Salvaged", then pay me a certain amount of $$ right? A different amount then it being a Total Loss and they keep the car.

If I salvaged it, I would have to get it fixed, pass inspection and then apply for a "rebuilt title" correct?

3 people have already offered to buy it as-is just driving by my house

Used Car market is :ng: right now.

Something like that.  If you were close enough, and the price was right, I'd buy it.
