You ever have one of those instances where it should go right but it just doesn’t? We are loading to goto San Felipe for a week and I am bringing a ton of stuff.. Anyhow I decide we are going to put one of the kids quads in the back of the truck to make more room in the enclosed etc.. I get the ramps out and tell my son.. put the quad in the back of the truck.. but listen son don’t put the quad through the back window or the truck.. lol.

This is his first time doing this because normally we just stick everything in the enclosed.

He runs it up gets it halfway in the truck.. gives it some gas and I’ll be damned if he didn’t manage to shoot both ramps out from underneath the quad.. quad slides off the back of the truck and I’m saying “jump! Jump! Jump”. He didn’t.. lands right on his back in the gravel.. luckily the quad just sat there vertically and didn’t go over backwards on top of him.

I gather him up and he’s roughing it out.. but bleeding a little bit from one of his arms.. All this just in time for my wife to happen to come out and witness all of it. Of course now I’m dealing with him, but the glare I’m getting is something I’m gonna have to deal with at some point. lol.

What a fuckin shit show..

Anyways after some coaxing.. he did end up managing to get back on the horse and got it tied down. The whole “dude you will be fine talk” from dad though.. I think we lost a little trust on that talk heading into the future.

Glad he's ok...
Hey, no scars, no proof and girls like scars!
LOL

Hopefully you both learned a very valuable lesson.

You always tie the ramps to the truck
Yep! That's why the ramps come with tie straps. Use them every time. Sorry to hear he got hurt but honestly you both got lucky he wasn't hurt more seriously. Thanks for sharing the incident so we can all be reminded of the importance to tie those ramps. It takes a big man to share the mistakes. Glad it was mostly the pride that took the brunt of it.

I have never heard of this.. albeit it makes sense when ya think about it?

With the quad being narrow though you’d have to run tiedown straps, probably to the front hooks in the front of the bed, but you would then probably run over with the quad once it’s in the truck kind of sounds like a nightmare. Maybe just ride the quad into the truck without whacking at the gas very end?

Your ramps have straps attached to them?

I shared it mostly for humor.. I don’t feel like there was some major safety failure or giant mistakes made here.. more just a shit happens moment.

I have loaded quads and bikes in and out of trucks my whole life and never had a problem..

Even last night I ran that quad in and out of the truck two or three times during the coaxing process just to show him it could be done easily and safely.

Anyone got a pic of these ramps with straps? I can honestly say I have never seen them before.. as mentioned earlier though 99% of the time everything just goes in the enclosed which is why he had never done this before.

You run the straps from the ramps down to the loops next to the receiver hitch...ITF-7652-A.webp

Some have little chains on them, and you just wrap them around the tailgate cable. You just don't want the ramp to squirt out. The last one I had didn't have the chains so I would take a tie down and got from the wrong on the ramp that was level with my hitch and just place the tie down on the ball.

I just showed that to my son and he said we are doing that next time lol

Never had ramps with 'em. Well, maybe they did come with them and I tossed 'em.

Yes, my ramps have straps on them. Happy to get a picture tonight if helpful. Really you can use any ratchet strap, rope, chain, etc. You just tie from the vehicle end of the ramp around some anchor point on the vehicle (hitch, bumper, etc). It doesn't take much. Just enough so the wheel torque doesn't shoot the ramp out instead of pushing the vehicle up the ramp. This video shows them:

Mine came with little chains with little hooks on them. I go around the tailgate cables and hook back to the chain. They're super cheap little chains but enough to keep from spitting the ramps out.

I have this tri-fold deal from HF that has a pair of chains for keeping the ramps from spitting out. In my case, they hook to the bottom of the bumper perfectly.90018_W4.jpg

At least he did not launch into the back window or do a wheel and set it down on a bed side. Strapping the ramps so they don't slide out is must if you ride up the ramps. Pushing the quad up the ramps does not matter.

I Always ratchet strap mine to the receiver, TIGHT. You want the straps going straight ahead. I don't think that V thing would even work?

Glad he's ok. Definitely a rookie mistake. Lesson learned.
