We are looking @ a 7 day cruise to Mexico through Holland America.

From San Diego (Leave Saturday afternoon)

Cabo San Lucas (1 Day)

Mazatlan (1 Day)

Puerto Vallarta (1 Day)

To San Diego (Arrive Saturday afternoon).

anyone do this kind of cruise have an opinion on it?

Any "must do's" in each of those ports?  We are not "sit on the beach" kind of folks.  we would want Safe activities away from the boat.  Hiking is would be ideal.

thanks

Bob

Have done maybe 6-8 cruises, while I have yet to do one to Mexico.  I always pay the extra money and go with the cruise lines excursions.  For the simple reason they will hold the boat for you, go on your own and you are on your own to get to the next stop.  While I was not on the trip but my Sister had a bus get stuck in a tunnel on the way back to the boat while visiting Rome.  They were two hours late getting back. The Boat was still there when they got back.  Now my parents friend who got them into going on cruises one time didn't want to go on the cattle call bus trip she took a private car service.  This wasn't like a guy on the dock this was a limo service she had used on another cruise in the same city.  Well that car got in a minor fender bender, they got hit. Well the driver can't leave until the cops clear him. She couldn't leave until the cops cleared them but the boat left her by twenty minutes.  She then had to fly ahead of the boat, get a hotel room hire a driver to get her from the nearest airport to the port where the boat was just pulling in.

Any way I always just go thru the list of stuff they have.

I’d wait till covid settles down. San diego govt is getting crazy again. North island and san diego schools initiated covid protocols again Friday.

First time around the city of san diego wouldnt let ships unload passengers. Some ships were stuck off coronado with their crews for over a year and the people were literally going crazy on the ships.

other than that. I love mexico. Beautiful. Great food

Interesting.  I did not know that was an option.  the last cruise I was on was 4 years long & they made me wear funny clothes & fix the ship in exchange for food.  LOL. I was going to look into cruise line sponsored field trips, thinking it would be easy to arrange & more of a known thing.

I did a  7 day cruise on Carnival out of Long Beach a little less than a month ago.  It was a great trip.  We are more of sit on the beach family.

In Puerto Vallarta we just headed to the beach and hung out all day.  Friends that go there all the time told us what place to to go as they have good food and will let you use the lounge chairs.  The area had the parasailing and every other beach activity.  Other people on the cruise did the zip lining and said it was a great time. Lots of hiking with the zipline excursion.  My friend that happen to be there on a trip did a offroad trip in the jungle that he said was really cool.

In Mazatlan we were not going to get off the boat, but decided to check out the Stone Island beach area.  Just a short walk when you get off the ship to catch a water taxi.  It is a beach area the locals frequent.  We ended up going to a place called Lety's - good food and lounge chairs to sit on all day.  We ended up doing a horseback ride there.  Super relaxing and good food.   Mazatlan is a really old city.   There were people that did the city tour and liked it.

Cabo was the only place we had a book excursion to do the dolphin swim that is like a 2 minute walk from where you get off the water taxi from the ship.  We had enough time to get a boat and check out the arches.  Cabo was a really short day on land.  I think it was maybe 6 hours.

The cruise lines offer lots of excursions at each stop.  Easier to book them through the cruise line.

The best food was in Puerto Vallarta and Mazatlan.  Cabo has good food, but also has american pricing.

Except Monkey Pox cases will now skyrocket :hah:

Good luck figuring out the cruise, they seem the most impacted vacations from C-19 insanity.

We did a similar cruise through Carnival.

Cabo was best stop, but with Carnival, was too short.  So we are going back on an all Inclusive in September.  LOL

I prefer Caribbean cruises over this Mexico one.

Much greener and nicer IMO.

& FWIE, we are not choosing this because we want to go on a cruise, we have been asked: "Do you want to come with us...".

I didnt leave nothin in Messico the last time I was there, honestly I dont feel like I have to go back.  but.......... Happy wife, Happy life.  Trying to make margaritas out of these lemons.

Have you been on a Cruise before???

If you haven't then go...they are fun!

Yeah, don't wonder off by yourself do the ship planned excursions

I have been on I think 6 cruises total...all the 3 day Mexico ones.

The first 3 with my buddy's...what a blast! We all rented the same, ugliest Tuxedos we could find for the dinner on Saturday Night. The first time we did all green...people thought we were part of the entertainment on the ship! It was epic!  We may have been inebriated :bag:

:lmao:

The last 3 were with my wife and we decided that we're done with cruises after the last time...we are more of the beach and hang out with the least amount of people around us as possible!

We did the 3-day booze cruise to PV. At the PV stop we did a JEEP Wine tour. The jeeps were HAMMERED, we drove on the "Baja 500" course to a winery and back to the ship. My mom/dad like wineries and we like off-roading so it was a duo trip we were both happy. This was on carnival from Long Beach part of the ship sponsored trips.

Doing a 10 day Alaska cruise on the 22 then maybe a 14 day to Hawaii in Oct. I get Balcony rooms for $100 a person, $1000 casino money $200 ship credit and free drinks thought the ship total with tax is like $600.. It is cheaper to live on a cruise ship..

In Skagway do the train, and sign up early (like NOW ) it sells out. Then do the bike down.  This is one side trip I have yet to do but looks fun.

Do not go up the cable car in Juneau, It is a 20 minute walk around at the top and a 2 hour wait to get on the car coming back.

Also while in Juneau eat at Tracey's or one of the other crab shacks, get the bisque as well as a crab leg. I normally do not go eat off the ship because you have to pay for it and the ship gives you all the food you can eat but Traceys is the bomb. Tracey's also gets a long line if you don't get there early, if it is long go explore some of the food tents.

Depending on the ship they only do Crab  one night for dinner and some ships do a BBQ on deck with crab and salmon one afternoon. So it is not non-stop.

See my post about Juneau to Stugots

Just go to Juneau last time I was there they had 4 or 5 different Crab shack restaurants and maybe 20 crab stands ( Think hot dog cart under a EZ up serving crab legs and crab bisque) THey are like Food trucks they serve all kinds of stuff made with crab.

The only reason why Tracey's Crab shack is so popular, besides it was one of the first. Is that on the menu board you can see  what ship the crab came off of and they work with Discovery Channel so all the ships are from Deadliest Catch.  People just loose there flipping minds to eat a King Crab leg that was caught on the Northwestern or Time Bandit

Cabo was a short day for us as well.  I guess the ships are limited on time depending on the tides when they stop in Cabo.

I actually liked PV and would consider going back there.

Caribbean cruises are fun too.  Just more involved getting to them versus driving down the 405 an hour and jumping on a ship.  We did a 7 day out of Puerto Rico.  Hit 5 islands in 7 days on the cruise.

Agreed it is easier going out of Cali.

We have done 3 out of Cali and 7 out of East Coast.

Will always prefer East Coast for cruises.  Just us.
