Jacob the chimpanzee is being hailed as an unlikely hero after saving a veteran zookeeper from drowning following a sudden stroke.
According to surveillance footage released by a local zoo, the incident occurred while the zookeeper was cleaning an enclosure. Moments after staff stepped briefly out of frame, the man suffered a stroke, lost consciousness, and collapsed face-down into shallow water. With no humans immediately nearby, the situation quickly became life-threatening.
The video shows Jacob, a chimpanzee housed in the habitat, noticing the motionless body and approaching without hesitation. He dragged the zookeeper’s head and upper body out of the water, then began pressing repeatedly on the man’s chest, as if trying to wake him. Within moments, other staff members rushed in and took over emergency care.
Doctors later confirmed that while Jacob was not intentionally performing CPR, the pressure he applied may have helped keep the man alive by preventing prolonged submersion and stimulating circulation until emergency responders arrived. Zoo officials emphasized that the chimpanzee’s actions were instinctive rather than trained, but nonetheless extraordinary.
Now recovering, the zookeeper took the incident with humor. “Sounds like Jacob is going to get a lot of treats from me when I get back to work,” he said with a laugh—grateful to be alive, and to the chimp who refused to let him slip away.
