Thirteen-year-old Austin Appelbee from Western Australia swam nearly four hours in rough ocean waters after his family’s kayak was swept far from shore. Battling massive waves and exhaustion, Austin pushed through nearly 2.5 miles (4km) of open ocean, determined to get help and save his mother, 12 year old brother, and 8 year old sister. “I just kept thinking ‘just keep swimming, just keep swimming,’” he later told reporters.
After reaching land, he ran 1.2 miles (2 km) to call for rescue. His mom and two younger siblings were found clinging to a paddleboard—cold and exhausted but alive. Austin humbly said, “I don’t think it was me who did it—it was God the whole time.” He prayed throughout the ordeal and promised to be baptized. His courage and faith are an inspiration!
