LS adaptor plate install

Is it typical to have this open space behind the flywheel? I have a lower plate that covers the bottom portion of the adaptor plate but I dont see the point when there's a huge gap at this location.
Also, I have the pilot bearing flush with the end of the crank. Is this the proper depth or does it need to bottom out and be set in a bit?

Yep, that gap is normal.
Make a piece to cover it or CBM sells a part that will cover that.

Pilot bearing should bottom.
