Looking at new toy haulers- Momentum or Vortex (Genesis)

Recently I picked up a new to me trailer- 08 weekend warrior and We got it home and my girl friend and I made the mistake of looking at a friends new toy hauler. My girlfriend and I are now entertaining the idea of purchasing a new one compared to keeping the old one. So I am looking for real world opinions.... I feel the momentum is built better but has limited cargo space, the vortex isnt much difference in price and I get more cargo then I need right now. If you own one of these brands how do you feel about the quality, fit and finish and are their options that I should consider adding to the trailer before I buy it or order it?

Though you didn't really ask, here is my "real world" opinion.

Keep your '08 for now.

Go on any toyhauler site right now and read the stories (after stories after stories) of the crap being put out by the manufacturers. 

Slides falling out, floors rotting from the crap they "waterproof" the belly with, mold under wallpaper from windows/roofs/doors not being sealed properly, brand new units where caulking had big gaps in on the roof coming right out of the factory.

I wouldn't buy a new one right now - in fact, I didn't last October though I thought I was going to.

No matter how much I looked, couldn't find a new one that I was ok with quality/fit/finish on.  And yes, looked at both Momentum and Genesis models.

Exactly. Until you have the new one connected to the truck don't even list the new one or else you are going find out that the new one they promised you to have in September , Was in the year 2023.

 Next dune season might even be interesting with spare parts for all the broken stuff.  I know towards the end of the year it was no longer Coyne has it run into El Centro and grab it , it was try all the dealerships our group is driving past to see if they have something.

 
Yes I was in the market a couple years ago myself. I have an 06 weekend warrior fifth wheel. I did the frame and wall upgrade many moons ago. This trailer has been solid otherwise. We bought the trailer new. Now I have friends and family that have bought new trailers and motor homes that have spent more time in the shop for repairs than in the sand camping. They just don’t make things like they used to.

 
My buddy has a brand new Vortex. We are at UTV takeover in Oregon and his refrigerator went out. Needs a new cooling unit. He's had some other issues too. He has a nice floor plan and the fit finish looks ok but as others mentioned the new ones are all cheap. Keep the WW.

 
Be cheaper to redo the interior of your Weekend Warrior and a lot less headaches.  Nice thing with a used toy hauler is the previous owner made all the trips to the dealer to fix everything.

It was an awesome trailer I just sold it last week to another couple going back and forth from california!

 
keep the weekend warrior and redo the inside if its outdated to your liking ,i have a buddy who toys to keep up with the joneses and sold his 2016 raptor that had no issues and bought a 2021 (34') freight liner style fully loaded for 3 hundred thousand.first trip to Colorado  he hit rain a rain storm and water was on the floor.thay never capped the rear wheel wells so water was spraying up and soaked the floors .his wife had all there clean towels on the floor as thay drove to soak it up then his self level didn't work when he got there, then on way home he's blowing 2 fuses on inside lights and his check engine light is on.1,600 hundred smackers a month in  payments and about 5,600 miles and he got one trip on it so far.dealer has had it 3 weeks now and waiting in parts and thay still  don't know if thay need to pull out all the furniture and pull up flooring to replace the subfloor as thay are waiting for the company to respond as to what to do.i have a 2014 keystone fusion and use the hell out of it back and forth from nj to Glamis and still no issues besides little stupid stuff from time to time.

 
Had a WW CR3709 

Purchased a2016 Blazen 395 this has a 16 foot garage with a sliding glass door,  love the sliding glass door and the 4 recliner chairs, 

the only issues we had was 

Roof came off in the corner, and was in repair for 3 months 

step to the bedroom was facing down at a 30 degree angle, 

walls sag, 

kitchen slide has eaten to motors due to wall sag,   just going to fix the wall myself, 

One chair, think they used some odd cleaning material on it and foot area is coming apart, 

Electric level only works when battery is fully charged, 

cargo door sags on large door, and propane door will only stay closed if locked during travel 

double door fridge does not work as good as the single door like the WW

I get the wall sag,  every chassis out there uses the same POS lippert Chassis,  

I would only get the Hydraulic Level kit,  the electric is such a pain to deal with, only works when the batteries are at its fullest, 

Replaced most of the door myself with the newer style slam latch, 

 
Look at ATC fivers. Not fancy, but built to last, and very high payload capacity.

If I felt like spending double the money than what I did for our 2020 Genesis 28CR,the ATC would’ve been it. Also I don’t think ATC had a 5er that has the cargo space (16’+) that I needed at the overall length I wanted to stay under(32’). Still a very nice trailer. 
The family and I have been really happy with our Genesis trailer..only real issue was I had to tighten the power and ground wires feeding the breakers. 

 
We are on our second Genesis, and have had good luck them. Momentum (Grand Design) roof system are better built, they also 10 grand cost more. The trick to TH longevity is to keep them stored inside. 

 
Genesis are decent. I have a 2020 3016IKS

Here is a break down. I have fixed everything myself with the exception of the main air conditioner that was replaced under warranty. 
 

- All the interior cabinets have too small of screws. They are installed at an angle to grab. 
- Double door fridge does not like high temps. Seems like a common issue. I am working on additional fans to move the air.

- All the tanks are poorly secured or not at all. 
- They broke off a drill bit under the flooring. I had to cut a slice in it to remove the bit. 
- The wall paper and cabinet paper are very thin. Beware of all the warning stickers they plaster everywhere. When you remove them it takes the wall paper. 
- 12 volt wiring was a nightmare. They had 20’ of extra wire rapped up and multiple leads on the battery. I cleaned it up using bus bars. 
- The blinds are cheap they will be breaking soon. 
- Factory tinted windows do not block out any heat.  My WW stayed way cooler. 

 

 
If you are thinking of the Momentum be sure to get the three axle one. The 350m two axle is over it gvwr when you fill the 100 gallon water tank, and that's before you put any toys in it. If you are looking at the G class be sure to upgrade to the 8000 lb axles.

 
From what I've seen among my group, Attitudes seem to have the most problems and are the worst built of the "big 3" (aka Genesis, Attitude and Momentum).  I can't speak too much about the other brands, since it seems like folks I know stick with those 3.  I liked my Genesis Supreme Envy, but they cancelled that line.  And either way, if I was doing a TH again it'd be a Momentum, period.

My buddy has a Attitude 35GSG and has nothing but problems! Because of that I went with a Forest River Stealth. Not as fancy as the attitude but I feel it is a better unit overall. But that is just my personal opinion.
