Just an idea if you dune alone sometimes...

Back in the 90's and 2000's we used to zip-Tye glow sticks to the whips ever night ride !, to see anyone that had crashed!. Scary to dune back looking for someone and no lights on ....

We used to do 60% of our riding at night, many times getting back to camp around 3am. Can’t even guesstimate how many times I picked up stragglers who were lost, broken down or just wandered away from their group. My wife would wake up in the morning to see how many breakfast burritos we had to make for our guests. It’d get interesting the next day trying to get people back to their camps and sometimes getting the people at the camps back out to a broke down rig.
Seems like the earlier days there was more etiquette.

Don't dune alone...EVER!
I dune alone a lot. Been doing solo rides for 20 plus years.

Why?

I don't like waiting. I don't like babysitting. I don't like every ride being a rescue mission (some rescue missions have great stories and aren't all bad). I don't like waiting for people to coral their kids and get in and out 20 times for fruit snacks and juice boxes. I don't always like other people's lines. The list goes on.

Also, You don't need a radio to dune. Is it a good tool? Yes. But WTF happened to people? We used to dune without radios and GPS for so long and now some can't leave camp without it. Plus, the constant chatter kills my vibe. MF'ers constantly talking. Go back to camp if you just want to talk.

That’s funny. That’s the reason our camp have not hooked up our car to car radios. I even turn the squelch all the way down while in the car, I don’t want to hear or reply to questions. I just like to dune with music.
But I don’t like duning alone. I know my way around glamis and will lead plenty but there is safety in numbers, especially on busy weekends.

I don't even like listening to music. I want to hear the car. I know I'm the minority on this topic.

But the radios are out of control. If you yap, I'm going to make fun of you. If your wife or GF is chatting, I'm going to ask why she's out of the kitchen and to go make sandwiches. If your kid is yapping...I'm going to teach them a new vocabulary.

Alright....who needs a hug??
Come here buddy...I got you!
Hahaha.

I just don't feel comfortable doing solo rides, There's always a what if? The best are the 2-4 in a group cause then you can get up to a pretty pace.
Whoever is leading always calls out direction/trail change, hazzards etc... responses are usually Copy!
All about fun but also safety as we have all had that OH SH*T moment...nice to have others with you!

I feel like you dune alone for other reasons as well haha.

As a leader in our group, the single duners are hard to navigate when you are going fast in the dunes. They pop up and disappear and it is hard to tell their direction and where they went. When it is a group of vehicles, you can see their pace and direction. To me duning solo is a recipe for a disaster.

Radios have become annoying, but for safety and keeping the group together, a necessary option, it was fine without radios when we were duning at slower speeds.

I see you haven't changed in all these years LOL

Yep Radios are now a total distraction but if you don't have one it makes for a cluster eff, even one person not being able to communicate properly can take a great ride and fuck it up.
We had a group on the radio who at first we thought was us telling a guy who was about to roll how to get unstuck and not roll as well as the other people in the group what to do to help out.
Best part was as we transitioned by Brawley Slide there, they were stuck trying to use SxS's to winch them out a strap with people holding on for dear life and the director still on the radio telling a guy named Mike what to do and not to do. Well first car rolled thru and say's "Think we found Stuck Mike"
It was on after that....
"Yep, what a tool"
"Is That how Rookies get cars unstuck"
"They are doing it all wrong"
"Should we stop and Help or shoot video"
"Have Fun Mike"

After spending the weekend in Glamis and talking to a lot of people about their radios, I realized a lot of people dont know that their radios actually have 4 different banks with HUNDREDS of channels that NO ONE else uses.

I wanted to share this Frequency list and what banks the frequencies are on so you & your group can find a more quite channel that everyone with a radio out there is using. If you have more questions about this, let me know!

PCI Frequency list!

This is also a great link to show you how to access the different banks of your Icom/Kenwood

Radio Guide

Also, your standard antenna is cut to length (152.000). If you find another channel you prefer, you can always recut the antenna, purchase a new Whip portion of your antenna if you need it longer or stop by the PCI booth and have them cut your antenna for you!

Antenna Cut Chart

I am going to make a post covering all this that I am going to go more into some tech checks you can do regarding your radio and its performance and issues but if anyone has any additional questions, please dont hesitate to reach out!

I've seen rugged radios with only like 20+ channels programmed into them..... a lot of the problem.
