GM’s Electro Motive Division 2 stroke engine is what caused the railroads to drop steam power; They were first used in demonstration locomotives in the late thirties, & powered many LST landing crafts on D day @ Normandy; They come in 8, 12, 16 & 20 V block sizes-16 was most popular for trains & river barge towboats; They are single overhead cam (gear driven off of the crank along with the turbocharger which freewheel over speeds thru a one way clutch as exhaust flow takes over), 4 exhaust valves in individual heads actuated by roller rockers with hydraulic lash control; Turbo compressed intake air passes thru water cooled after coolers into the engine block plenum & then into the cylinders as the piston goes down uncovering multiple intake port windows; You can actually check the combustion pressure thru the outside side of the block with “cylinder test ports valves”by screwing on a temporary test gauge; I spent over 10 years as an onboard River tow boat barge engine & was trained for 2 weeks in Chicago @ the EMD locomotive factory in 1979; Caterpillar owns EMD now; You need a chain hoist to replace each “power pack assembly” which consists of the round head, liner, piston & carrier, & either “fork or blade” connecting rod-which weighs around 500 pounds total assembly of PP; These engines have proven very reliable; It’s really wild when a piston top cracks allowing 1200psi combustion gases into the crankcase, blowing the spring loaded valve cover latches loose opening them & filling the entire engine room with blinding smoke!
