The cave paintings discovered on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi, specifically within the caves located in the Maros district, underwent dating analysis in a 2014 study utilizing Uranium–thorium dating methods. This scientific approach allowed researchers to determine the age of these ancient artworks. Among the findings, the oldest depicted image was a hand stencil, which was estimated to be at least 39,900 years old. Additionally, a painting showcasing a babirusa, a type of pig-deer, was dated back to at least 35,400 years ago. This places the babirusa painting among some of the most ancient known examples of figurative artistic representations worldwide. This remarkable discovery not only sheds light on the artistic capabilities of early humans but also provides valuable insights into their cultural practices and interactions with their environment during that distant time period.
