Glamis CSI - need your help

I own a 2006 GMC pickup that the paint is flaking off in big chunks. I have gotten two different bids thatSierra were around $12,000 to $15,000. Hard to justify putting that kind of money in a 18 year old truck (although it is a pre-def diesel with only 135k miles). So the last guy I spoke to said yes it’s prohibitively expensive to paint a car in Commiefornia. Which made me think can somebody from Arizona tell me if in fact it would be cheaper to have it painted there? I don’t have a problem making the road trip. Maybe if you can, recommend a good shop.

Thanks in advance for your help!

I can't speak to auto painting; however, my wife's family brought their Moho from Cali to AZ to have painted. They said it was about 25% less than what the shops in Cali were quoting.

The problem with that truck are twofold, the AMOUNT of paint you need and the prep work. Pretty much everyone has gone to water-based auto paint now. Painting with something else, is just an issue down the road.

The PREP work for that truck is what most of the money is going to be... The smart thing is do the R&I work  yourself, get a DA sander and take the panels down and prime them yourself if you can... that is the majority of the cost.  The actual paint time is not that much.

The new paints aint cheep. Even Maaco is fairly pricey anymore.

You will definitely save some money on labor rates out of state.

Without seeing the rest of the truck and more background on your love of its condition:

Little sanding and rattlecan!  All day, wouldn't think twice.  Especially being white.

Pull that little chrome trim off while you're at it

It’s really all over the truck, even in the bed. That’s the problem you pretty much need to strip everything off. I really love the truck but it is 18 years old, not going to keep it too many more years.

I don’t really want to try and sand it myself or shaker can it for that matter.

Maybe I will give your friend Danny a call and see if he can give me a rough idea.

Thanks

Buddy of mine had his son’s Chevy 1500 prerunner painted for about $1500. Just a simple mask and shoot job.

sand those spots and wrap it

I have an 01 F-350 that I just had repainted. Paid right at $12k but that was stripping everything, removing mirrors, door handles, bumpers, etc and doing it right. Looks like a factory paint job. Ended up spending another 2k on bumpers, bed liner, lights, grill, etc since the paint turned out so nice. Beats spending $80-$100k on a new truck that gets driver about 6k miles a year. I don't plan on selling so it made sense to put a little money into it.

GM's delamination problems were a big problem. You really have to get everything and not miss any areas, or it will be back sooner than you know. If you do decide to chase it yourself I would go at it with 220 grit paper and then a good coat of catalyzed primer. It is labor intensive, I know!

I bought the paint to do my wife’s truck 03 Chevy in yellow the the paint, primer and clear about 1200 bought in California it’s very good quality paint I’m sure it’s cheaper in arizona. I just don’t have the time so I am giving the paint to a shop plus 5000 so all in about 6500 with a new windshield

We paid about 34k for the truck in 03 it has about 125,000 miles and is in great shape and will keep it as our spare car because I just bought her a new Dodge Rebel 4x4 list price of 74,000 but I got 11,140 off sticker so I payed double the old truck I figure the cost of the paint is worth it to have a good looking dependable older truck

I picked it up in Dinuba ca near Fresno after delivering a load to the space force base in Vandenberg

I would take that bitch straight across the border and have it painted in Mexico. Especially if you're not keeping it. Arizona might only save you 2k or less.

I had a similar issue with my GMC and was going to wrap it but ended up selling it instead.

What's the price to have a truck like that wrapped? Might be your short term solution if not keeping forever.

I will add, to do this job in our shop, 24 years ago would cost between 8 and 10K

Just went through a big a big paint job on motor home, complete color change.  The cost in Cali was 50 to 60 k, Arizona was 45 to 50k, I did more research and found Navarro's in Los Algadones, Mexico, right between Buttercup and Yuma the cost was unreal, I felt like I robbed them at 20k for a complete color change, with 2 color graphics, came out killer, yeah not perfect but for 20k I can have it done every few years considering what it would cost elsewhere. I would totally recommend them for cars, motorhomes and more, very easy to get to and the Tacos were cheap.

That looks pretty good. But at 20k every couple of years wouldn’t it be better to build an Rv garage??
