My buddy lawn darted a can am.

He was wearing a helmet.

However his helmet was old, outdated or defective, when he lawn darted they say the helmet caused him to have 12 fractures in his skull from where the cage folded into his head. bar hit him in the face, caused him to have a really bad black eye that swole shut within 20 minutes of the accident.  He refused treatment, rangers came, police came, hell everyone came and thought he had been drinking (doesn't drink just ran out of talent), and went to sit in the rv. within about 10 minutes he threw up probably a gallon of blood, at least they say that what it looked like. They hauled him home, went to ER and he's still trying to heal up about 3 weeks later. Dr said the helmet did more damage than good, as the foam was bad I guess. That can am cage sure didn't hold up well. My other buddy lawn darted and went 3 times end over end in his rzr and even though it was a factory cage it did hold up.

looking at that can am cage, it was paper thin.

He will recover just be a slow process.

Damn dude. Sorry to hear. Hope for a speedy recovery.

Edited to say, imagine no helmet though? Eeek.

I have been in a motorcycle accident and due to a top quality helmet and 10 years of physical therapy, i can still walk,  every time i purchase a helmet i do not cheap out,  i think a top quality helmet is the way to go, and the correct helmet for what indented, if a cage is near me, i stay away from a moto helmet and stick to a full face road helmet like my Simpson from PCI, and a quality neck brace.   When for my Kart it is a completely different helmet built just for Kart Racing a the quads i use a Motocross helmet.  The Alper Family has a trailer of helmets.

The Canam OEM cages are .065 "Dual Phase Steel" as Canam likes to promote it as. , complete garbage muffler tubing.

Protect a $50 head with a $50 helmet...

the dr said no helmet would have been better in this case than no helmet. who knows though

that's what they said, couldn't believe how thin it was. looking at a 2023 rzr xp my buddy just bought it seems they upped their game some, looks a little more beefy than my 2021 turbo s factory cage.

I hope he gets well ASAP. I wear a Helmet everytime I get in a sxs. I however did Learn a lesson Years ago while riding a quad wearing an old Helmet that I had for years and I crashed Hard and it flew off. I got Lucky so I lately been trying to get a New Helmet every few Years

I love my Shoei helmet but it is getting old.  May have to retire it.

As for the old helmet vs no helmet... Possibly the added weight of the helmet vs no added weight.  ??   :dunno:

from what i understand the failed padding allowed the head to bounce around in the shell i guess.

who knows, alot of things are freak accidents.

If your melon is bouncing around in a helmet with failed/ old padding it wasn't going to fare much better without a helmet on. If some Doctor was telling me that I would think that he may have had his head bounced off a couple hard objects at some point as well.  I also would be looking for a new Dr.

1988, my brother and I were in a rollover accident, I was 17, he was 20. We weren't wearing our seatbelts. After we were taken to the hospital, we were the 4th rollover that day!

We were the only 2 people not wearing our seatbelts and the only 2 people that didn't have neck and back injuries. I still have a chipped bone in my nose and scars on my hands.

Now, the Dr. came in to talk to us and said how lucky we are and couldn't explain our situation. He did say that he would advise us to wear our seatbelts from then on!

Haven't driven with out mine on ever since!

It kind of boggles my mind that the Dr. in the above comments stated the guy would have been better off without a helmet... :kenk:

But hey, what do I know...I'm no Dr.

:lmao:

I wonder if there's been a bit of misunderstanding/misinterpretation  with what the doctor actually said?

OR this was a REALLY crappy helmet.
