Chapter closed

Pretty sure I live less than a mile from you. I have that SCU you can drive any time you want.....if you get the urge. It's in the garage on a lift. I'm not using it anyway.....

but it still make me feel good when I walk under it. Much cheaper than therapy (so I hear).

For every door that closes, another one opens.

I get it. I'm 'only' 53 but the amount of work to prep, load, drive, unload, set-up camp, have 'fun', load back up, drive home, unload, clean toys, do maintenance, etc. is becoming an issue.  Especially as I am in the middle of doing all that chit now and wondering WTF am i even doing.  I used to do it because my kids loved to go with us, but all three are on their own now. My son is meeting us there with his GF and he still LOVES it.  Pretty sure that is the only reason I spent $1000 at costco and another $1000 on fuel to meet him there..... Sand cars are a lot like boats.  The two best days are the day you buy them and the day you sell them. AND the best sandcars (like boats) are the ones your friends own (and maintain) and invite you to hang out on...........

As you are well aware, I sold my Funco about 2 years ago and the only thing I miss is camping with you guys. I always enjoyed sitting around a good fire, with a good bourbon, with good friends. Like 1newbie said, it’s a ton of work when you do all of your own maintenance on your car, trailer and motorhome. I don’t miss that at all. Although, ripping through the dunes for the last 20+ years was an absolute blast!
I think you will be fine. You have been going to the dunes for a very long time. Turning the page was awesome for me, I hope that you feel the same.

one thing that is cool is to see my son and his friends LOVE the sport and camping.  Even though they are in their early 20's and cannot afford the whole show (RV, cars, SxS, etc.). They still show up in a tent and a ratty old dirt bike that barely runs because they LOVE it.  They show up with a tent, no food, no riding gear, etc. and I do my best to help them out.  I go mostly to provide them with an RV to use for cooking, bathroom, etc. and drive my SxS if they want.  I love seeing their excitement and energy getting into the sport.   My wife (bless her soul) HATES camping (she liked it when we had the diesel pusher) but she goes and cooks for all the kids and never complains.     Sorry if I am OT.

To the OP; hope you can get there in some capacity at least once a year.  Sometimes sitting shotgun is even better IMO.........There was a long thread here years ago about all the drama of upkeep, loading, driving, etc and whether it was even worth it.  A lot of the responses were similiar and it came down to just getting out there to clear your mind.  Whether that was in a camper, a tent, as a passenger, on a quad, etc.  Sometimes sitting by a campfire with a beverage and watching stars is good enough.

Don't know what I would do if I couldn't dune anymore.

Hopefully you will find something that will fill the void and gives you the same pleasure that dunning did.

Best of luck to you in your next chapter.

Like I said " sad to Hear" but you have a great family &friends !, see ya in Buttercup Master Leader.....

What he said^^^^^ Peace

I sold all of my offroad stuff last year & am still a bit lost.  I knew it was time to move on, I had been working up to it for a couple of years, but was not sure what I was going to move onto.  Im still not 100% sure.  Ive started doing long range shooting, which Ive wanted to do for a while now, and its interesting & fun & lots of cool stuff to learn.  But....... its not scratching in exactly the right spot......

Good luck Richard, hope you find something fun to do.

A true dune man!

We are running out of true hardcore dune people that started in a truck, tent, something to ride, comp hill back in 70's & 80's.

Good luck on your next chapter!

My goal is to still be driving for the next 20 years (maybe a little slower someday, but not now).  Building a new engine right now.  That would make me 86.  Gotta have a goal.  Yes by the time I get it all packed up, it does get tiring.  But after a great ride and a huge smile, I feel on top of the world.

I hope you stay on GD.com, you are a good contributor and source of knowledge.
