Never had to (thankfully.) The only time I got really close was when leaving the "area" during the '92 LA riots. 

 
see quite a few here in az who open carry,The other day was at bass pro a construction worker wearing bright yellow shirt thought he was mexican cartel carrying his gun inside waist with just the handle sticking out in the open and no holster!Wont be surprised if he has a negligent discharge one day

I prefer to keep mine out of sight and do so.If camping or out in the forest ,desert i may open carry as its just easier but in town prefer concealed.

 
Yet another reason I love the south. Absolutely no CCW required. Kind of evens the playing field a bit.

 
I hope I NEVER have to expose mine. We travel along the borders of nearby states and hope I don't get a knock on my moho door. Peace

Here in TN, a CCW is not required but I obtained mine anyway.  After a year living here, I've only seen one person display a sign of carrying.  The assumption is that EVERYONE is carrying yet I've only seen one.  I carry my P226 but during late Spring and Summer, the weather is just too hot to wear pants so I wear shorts every day which makes it more difficult to CC, particularly because I wear running shorts on the daily.  So, I carry it in my bag pack so I don't display any sign that I'm carrying.

Here is another option to pretty much carry concealed and in plain sight at the same time. I got an unmarked one, but my buddy was smarter and got the one with the cross on it. I've heard that no one ever asks about the one marked "insulin pump", but that EMT's don't like it.

CCW's are not required in AZ either, but there is reciprocity with some other states if you have one, and you can buy a gun here without another background check if you have a CCW.
