Just finished washing the trucks.

As usual, an argument between my wife and I as to use tire shine or not.  I like using it.  Not the "wet" stuff but the standard foam on and leave, tire cleaner.

She claims it ruins tires.  I claim it makes them look good.

Anyone know if this stuff is bad for tires or not?

I’ve used the foam for a long time. The only thing I’ve noticed is that it messes with the concrete.  You can’t see the stain until it gets wet.

The thinking went 2 ways that I knew of. The layer of shine acted like magnifying glasses and caused the sun to prematurely crack the rubber. The other line of thinking was that the chemicals in the shine dried out the rubber. I stopped worrying about it at some point and just quit using the shine. I lived on a dirt road and it attracted the dust. If you will wear out the tires in 7 years or less, use it if you want is my advice. I had very expensive Michelins that cracked around the sidewalls in 2 years. Freaked me out enough that I talked to an area michelin rep who said the higher natural rubber content is what causes the cracking, but it's just cosmetic. They never leaked air even at 7 years when I sold the truck and they didn't have tire shine on them ever.

I use this on my tires. It leaves a matte finish and is supposed to be good for rubber. I initially got it for the slide seals for my toyhauler to keep them in good condition. Not sticky at all, dry to the touch after applying it.

Not sure if the foam stuff is bad, but 303 comes highly recommended.

My car wash guy uses one from chemical guys and it gives the tires a new look versus shiny. Not a fan of the shiny look.  No adverse affects noticed.

If only t c was still here...

I like the armor-all look of wet tires

Imo, it don't make no difference in the life of the tire.  Make that beoch look good.

I’ve heard the stories of it making the tires go bad. Probably an old wives tale.

In any case, I don’t use the stuff but it looks good as long as you don’t plan on going near dirt. Unless you like your tires looking like powdered donuts 🍩

Its hard to argue against a UV protectant. Be fun to dive into the car wash thing again. Maybe TC can post i actually learned a few things from him about car washing. There is a youtube guy i liked a couple years ago. Seemed like an honest hard working dude. Wonder what he would recommend for protecting tires that see dirt roads.

303 Aerospace Protectant got greedy and wanted $60.00 for a gallon, so switched to:

VRP

$37.44 for a gallon, and I dillute it with distilled water in a spray bottle like suggested by a user that is a Pro. Detailer.

Nice.  Been using this for years on my Banshee plastics.  Recommend by a pool guy friend of mine.

I've been using on my trailer tires to prevent sun/age damage.   Never noticed how it looked.

I dont put chit on my tires every 5 yrs buy new never had an issue and I dont care about it looking fancy

Just yesterday i was under Lauries car because she thought something might be dragging. Noticed the tire sidewalls were cracking pretty good. Found the date code and it was only 2021!! In my head i was thinking we should use some type of protectant.

Some tires are made with rubber that cracks early on, it is what it is.  I personally don't use anything on my tires, I just wash them with soapy water when I wash the car then dry them and leave them be. I don't care for the blingy wet look, besides that I work on cars for a living and those tires that I have to take off that have shiny stuff on them just makes my job extra greasy and dirty, it kind of pisses me off really. But ok, I like the products from Chemical Guys too, it is not greasy and not sticky. Don't know of it will make a difference in the life of the tire or not though, you should be replacing them at about the 5 year age anyways.

Its funny mentioning TC because i think he liked Adams Polishes. I might have the story wrong. Something that Adam put a lot of effort towards car polish. His efforts became what is now Chemical Guys and sold in walmart. I remember the story leaving me wanting to buy Adams products and not support Chemical Guys because they kind of stole some of the chemistries.

Is that true? Hell i dont know. Just speadin rumors yall.

I do know an important factor especially in the summer is whether you can apply products in the shade or not. Some people have to wax in the direct sunlight. I think Adams makes wax designed for that. More real world application. People on this site likely park their cars on the driveway and have toys in the garage.

I use foam spray(no touch), but also wipe it down because it dries more evenly. Hell, I use it in the engine bay too... spray, sit and wipe off. Everyhing looks new

Ya, thats the stuff I use.   No shine, just a nice black.

Ill keep using it and mix in some 303 at times.
