After a 2 year absence I was finally able to make it back down to Baja for some fun in the SXS with Erik at Black Rhino Performance a few weeks ago.  This is the group I have been doing Baja trips with for several years.  Black Rhino Performance usually put together a few rides a years in Baja and they will also do private trips.  This one happen to be a trip my friend set up with Erik.   We has several people on the trip that had never been to Baja or never done any off-roading in Baja.  A few of my friends from Texas made the drive and I think they are hooked on Baja.

Prior to the trip Baja was hit with the hurricane and the week before our trip the Baja 400 race took place.  We figured there would still be lots of water in areas and sections would be beat up due to the race the week before.  Surprisingly there really was not much water and only certain sections were beat up from the race.

This ride states in Ensenada and head south along the coast to San Quitin.  We spend a day in San Quitin  and the following day head back to Ensenada.  We covered almost 340 miles on this trip.   I took my kid with me and he drove most of the first day and second day and a few section on the third day.  He did a great job behind the wheel.  He managed to miss the cows and not hit the donkey that came flying onto the road.  The donkey was pissed and did not know which way to run (sorry no pictures as I was hoping it did not end up on our laps.  LOL!).

The drive down to Ensenada from TJ is an easy drive except when your friend's Chevy 2500 decides to throw a serpentine belt.  Turns out you lose power steering and the brakes are basically non-existent.  Add in a trailer 2 SXSs on it and it is good time on the toll road.  My trailer brakes were not working either so that just made it more fun.  Of course this happen as we were going through a construction zone.  If you have every been in Mexico driving through a construction zone it is quite entertaining.  The cones are placed wherever, the lands go from wide to super narrow and there is usually some person in regular clothes waving their hands to let you know your entering a construction zone.  LOL!

We managed to get to the third tooth booth before pulling over to fix the issue.  My friend ahead of us had an extra serpentine belt.  Open up the hood and get the belt out and inspect the pulleys.  Of course the one idler pulley in the difficult spot was frozen.  Thankfully these are all common Chevy parts and there a ton of Autozones.  Sent our friend to get the parts while we waiting on the side of the road next to a OXOX store.  While waiting for my friend to get back my friend crawled under the trailer to see what was up with the trailer brakes.  Turned out the wire got cut, so a quick patch job and we had trailer brakes.  By the time my friend got back the idler pulley was removed and we were ready to install everything.  Turns out the idler pulley he returned with was the right size, but wrong bolt hole size.  So back to Autozone!  Well of course they did not have the correct pulley and had to order it.  Thankfully they just needed to get it delivered from another store in Rosarito and would not be there until 4.    So we made the call to keep driving and use the trailer brakes to get us through Ensenda to our hotel.

Finally made it to the hotel in time for the pool and some much needed beverages.

Next morning we headed down the highway to Santo Tomas for a gas stop then off to the dirt and the coast.  The first 20 or so miles down the highway to the gas stop was entertaining.  My friends Polaris was having issues with the rear brakes.  They were dragging and they had a small brake fire, which was quickly put out.  LOL!   My other friend was having voltage issues and another friend his car was not running right.  The gas stop turned into a fix it stop.   Removed the now heat treated brake calipers off the one car and sealed off the brake lines so he could continue with just front brakes.  Other friend turned out he forgot to plug a wire into the voltage regulator and that one was all good.  The third one had bad injectors.  The person running the chase vehicle/team had injectors, but had to go back to Ensenada to get them.  Figured we would just fix the car when we got to San Quintin so on the trailer it went.

After the gas stop it was smooth sailing.   I let my kid drive after the gas stop.   Always something so cool about the first view of the coast as you are going down the trail.

Went down the coast through some village areas on our way to the secret beach.  Unfortunately the trail leading to the secret beach was not drivable this trip.

The ride on the beach before you head into San Quitin is so much fun.  My friend has a video of my X3, but not sure if it will upload onto the site.

Did get a picture of a cow which was a few miles before the donkey ran out on the road.

In San Quintin we got some breakfast and then headed to the beach to relax for a few hours.  Nothing beats a few hammocks and relaxing on the beach.

While on the beach some kids and their families stopped by to check out the cars.

The ride back to Ensenada always seems to be a faster pace and rougher as we are going the direction the race was run.  Stopped at Shipwreck, which really does not have much ship left.  5 years ago the entire ship bottom half was there and now it is just a small section left.

On the road heading from the coast back to the highway we had one incident.  The road is a rally style road and you can haul the mail as long as it is clear.  Locals use the road.   My friend that had no rear brakes came into a corner a little to hot and was not able to correct it due to only front brakes.  He end up going off the road and they flopped onto the passenger side.  They managed to put a stick through the plastics right near the gas tank.  Nobody was injured and they were able to get the car to the highway and onto the the chase trailer.  Car went into limp mode and easier to throw it on the trailer for the highway drive back to hotel in Ensenada.

Got the cars loaded up and off to the pool for some drinks.

I miss going down there / Its been WAY too long!!!!

What a great trip...love the pics.....would love to dive into some of those oysters and cold beer!

So on the way home we decided to cross in Tecate as it always seems to be easier.  8 of us caravanned to the border.  As we were going down the road to make the turn to get into the border line we passed a Federale.  He had a couple of cars pulled over.   3 of use made the left turn to get in line and were thrilled to see the line was super short.  The bonus of coming home on a Monday morning.

Well the Federale decided to pull over the rest of the group and try to tell them there was no left turn allowed and they had to enter the line from another location.  Total BS stop as several big rigs went by them making the turn.  The person in the rear of the group goes to Mexico all the time so he drove up and started arguing with the cop.  $40 later and the group was in the border line.  Most of the group were first times so they got the full Baja treatment.  LOL!

Border wait was 15 minutes.

Did make a stop at a coin-op wash on the way home to clean up the cars a little.

Once again Baja did not disappoint.  It is always an adventure and great memories with these trips.  A few of the first timers are now hooked and understand what I try to explain to them before they went on this trip.  My kid has an absolute blast on these trips and he did a great job wheeling my X3.

Hopefully I will be heading back next year to do a run from Ensenada to San Felipe or explore other areas of Baja.   Baja trips are my favorite.

Awesome!

So how many belts did you go through and tires?

Sorry if you stated in above posts, I didn't read everything.

We ate a lot of oysters and fish tacos.  It ended up costing $8 a person and that had to be 8 -10 dozen or more oysters.   I am not a huge oyster person, but something about getting them fresh from the farm.

No belts and no tires.  I think maybe one person smoked a belt on the beach.  There were no flat tires, which is amazing.  Coming back up the coast on the race course sections were super rocky and rough.
