We need a freezer first......Price is on below what local stuff is here in Norco.....I think maybe next year I'll have to do a 1/2 a cow..... 1/4 is a great option.... I guess I'm going freezer shopping.
Let's talk about freezers!
Chest vs stand up= Stand up every time. This actually saves marriages fellas. They take up less floor space, use almost the same vertical space when you factor in needing to lift the lid on a chest, and give you more options to organize and access your cuts. They might take a dollar more per year to run electricity wise but not when you factor in the complete disassembly of your chest freezer to find your brisket for Super Bowl Sunday.
About the fifth time your wife has to go freezer diving for dinner, your idea of buying a 1/4 cow is not so neat to her anymore. Don't get me wrong, it's doable and a ton of people have them. But if you're starting from scratch anyway- this is a much better experience.
Size= 7 to 10 cubic ft work great. 11 to 14 cubic ft are ideal for most. 20+ cubic ft is the ultimate for a family.
DO NOT hassle with going to the box stores. Go online and take advantage of the free shipping. These guys show up, unbox and haul away trash plus set the freezer wherever you want it. I've walked at least 60 customers through this process over the years.
Here's the one I recommend. It's a few extra bucks but a garage ready simple means it can handle temperature swings and 48 hour power outages without losing your investment. I have two sitting outside that see temps in the single digits up to low 100's. Zero drama. Do not go cheap on your freezers guys, even the top quality ones are really inexpensive for what you get.

In ten years we have had three (out of hundreds) customers lose a freezer and its contents to power outages/tripped gfi's and a freezer that just quit working. Pro-tip- your homeowners policy covers this type of loss with zero deductible for up to $1500. For an additional $19 per year I moved my limits up to $10000 per occurrence because I have multiple freezers.
