I've got a supposed rear main seal leak in my 2011 F250 4x4 diesel. I'm waiting to get it into a shop for an inspection / repair. In the meantime I've been calling around to see if anybody could get me in sooner. A couple of places told me that I'm looking at an easy $5 - $6k repair since they need to take off the cab. Is it really necessary ?  I assumed they can just drop the tranny and get it from there. I appreciate any feedback you might have.

I had a rear main seal leak on a '13 F250 PS and if I remember correctly, they had to remove the tranny. No cab removal that I was aware of. Mine was done under warranty.

I thought the only reason they took thw cabs off was to remove heads.

I think cab removal for engine repairs ended when Ford got rid of Navistar. Rear main seal does require separating the engine from the transmission but you could have a leaking oil pan that is notorious on the 6.7 which also requires transmission removal. Either way, you'd be smart too do both while the transmission is out regardless of which is leaking.

at 10 minutes you get a good look of the rear main seal    the upper oil pan is the more common leak

It's not necessary for a rear main seal but I can almost guarantee that's not the issue... it's probably an upper pan at the back of the engine. My 6.0 has the same chit ass problem and the same chit ass design. If it's a pan leak, the motor has to be lifted for access and it's easier to remove the cab than just the front clip.

no sir it did not lol, the 6.7 shares many of the same characteristics of the 6.0. It's just easier to remove the cab as it take about 2 hours

My son is a ford tech. It's the upper pan gasket. IE  your screwed. Tranny has to come out. Lower pan and upper pan. Cab usually stays on. It's a 5k job easily.  He almost won't do them on the side as they suck that much.

Thank you. Sounds like I need to consider selling the truck as is. Not sure I want to sink 5k into it as I'm around 260k on the ODO

Does it leak more when towing? That is usually when it's noticeable.  My BIL thought his went bad only to find out that it was something up in the valley. I'd look to see if you have oil in the valley. Then you might be lucky.

On a side note. The new 10 speeds are nice....

That's when I noticed it. Got home from Glamis and had oil spray on my toy hauler.

Where are you located, if near Fontana ca I can help you

None of this sounds right to me. I did an upper oil pan gasket for a customer that has a fleet of these 6.7s on a 2017. It was a pretty easy job even without a lift. Pulled the transmission and tcase together and just scooted them back a ways, lifted the engine a little and pan out- pan in. Took a little over half a day. I charged him $800 labor.

It was even under warranty and could have been completely free at Ford but he didn't want the truck tied up for too long so he opted to just pay me to do it.

At the time I had zero experience working on a Ford 6.7 other than having deleted my own and doing oil changes. I thought it was a really easy job as far as pulling the transmission and such.

I did a gas engine replacement for another customer on a 2014 that got sky high quotes from other places talking about cab removal and things like that. It took a little over 2 days with swapping everything over from old engine to new but was still a really easy job. No cab removal. I quoted them 40 hours. It ended up being 19.
