Alternators and ground

Had a CBM 250A alternator that was making some sparks, took it to CBM for a rebuild and ordered a mechman 250A. I noticed the mechman has a stud for ground. I am assuming due to the housing being billet? Do these need be grounded? and if so, can I run it to the block? The CBM alternator is billet as well, and doesn't have a ground spot...
 
I certainly would try to get it grounded to something else then the bracketry, vibrations and dissimilar metals.

not exactly related but on my boat the Powermaster alternator had a ground stud and yes I went to the iron block. The mounts are all dissimilar metals, chrome/aluminum/steel.
 
If you bond your alternator to your block you should also bond the block to the transaxle and the transaxle to the frame. You should do this even if you choose not to bond the alternator.

Yes, all alternators need to be grounded.

If you are grounding it to the block, through the brackets, as previously said, you have to be sure there is continuity through all the dissimilar metals. Be sure to remove any paint!

Then be sure the block has a solid electrical path, to the ground side of the battery.
